Some years are worse for the flu than others, and this year’s flu is worse than average.
It is not, though, anything like the Spanish Flu, or anywhere near a crisis any more severe than occurs naturally every few years, despite what all the “experts” are saying and all the hype being given to it, especially in countries with socialized health care systems like Great Britain.
⚠️ BREAKING:
Europe Hit by Superflu Surge; UK Hospitals Overwhelmed, Schools Ordered Shut

Don’t get me wrong. The Influenza virus is no small thing.
Well, yes, it is, but you know what I mean. It can be very dangerous for many people, and even if it doesn’t put you in the hospital, it is one of the most miserable experiences to get the flu. I am pretty much a hermit these days, spending all my time spewing out words onto a computer screen, but even I know that getting the flu really sucks.
But it has always sucked, and this strain of influenza is, so far, not causing more hospitalizations per case, but is instead a bit more common than in many years because they blew it when formulating the vaccine, and even when they get it right, the flu vaccine is not especially effective compared to most. Respiratory viruses are much harder to vaccinate against than something like smallpox.

Still, people are being bombarded with stories about the “superflu” that is sending droves of people to the hospital. Newsflash, folks: hundreds of thousands of people a year are hospitalized by the flu every year in the US, because the flu is awful and dangerous if you are especially vulnerable. And as the population ages, it will get even more so.
In the 2017-18 flu season, more than 700,000 people were hospitalized for the flu. Nobody was talking about masking, In 2019, another bad flu year, Anthony Fauci was asked about masking for the flu and he laughed, saying it wouldn’t help.
Wash your hands.
I’ll never know if it was the H3N2 strain, but it was the sickest I’ve ever been. Don’t take it lightly https://t.co/TT0NoUyynR

People shouldn’t take the flu lightly, of course. Just because it is a normal part of life and inescapable over time, trying to avoid it is a good idea, and if you get it you shouldn’t dismiss it out of hand. For that matter, gutting it through when you are sick is usually a bad idea; you are more likely to spread the disease to others if you go about, and even an ordinary disease can turn nasty.
My mother died of sepsis after strep throat went wild. It happens.
A conflation of ‘flu’ and ‘covid.’ 🤦♀️

But screeching about it and pretending every year that the return of a totally predictable virus is worse than stupid. In the UK they are talking about masks again, and I have even seen it brought up here.
No.

The “superflu” is just the flu. And, if you look at the numbers without panic-induced hysteria, you will see that even COVID had nothing on the Spanish Flu. The Spanish Flu had a per capita death rate about 30x higher than COVID-19, not that you would know that given the hysteria.
“Superflu” is peaking.
It might have another peak later on but it is not doing anything unsual.https://t.co/W0sstotrdz pic.twitter.com/7JSZuxluf2

The “superflu” talk is marketing speak and not reflective of reality.
I leave it to you to wonder what they are marketing, and why.
