CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten revealed Friday that President Donald Trump is starting his second term with a significantly improved approval rating compared to his first term.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted earlier this week, Trump’s approval rating now stands at 47%, with a disapproval rating of 41%.
This marks a stark improvement from January 2017, when Trump entered the White House with a historically low net approval rating.

Enten shared his analysis on CNN’s “News Central,” noting the sharp contrast between Trump’s current standing and where he began his presidency eight years ago.
“Look, the American people really like what they’re seeing, at least compared to where Donald Trump started eight years ago,” Enten stated.
“Back in January 2017, Donald Trump became the first president in history to start his presidency with a net negative approval rating.”
The latest poll shows Trump with a net approval rating of plus six, representing a nine-point increase since he first took office.
“This is a sign that the American people, at least initially, like what they’re seeing,” Enten added.
“More Americans approve of Donald Trump’s job than disapprove. And that is very much unlike what we saw eight years ago.”
Enten further emphasized that this is the highest net approval rating Trump has achieved as president, surpassing his previous peak of plus three during his first term.
“Donald Trump isn’t just in a better position than he was eight years ago at this point,” Enten explained.
“He’s in a better position than he was at any point during his entire first term. Things have very much turned around.”
Enten attributed part of this shift to Trump’s approach in his second term, describing it as a “very, very different administration” that appears to resonate more with the public.
He also noted a broader shift in public opinion on key policy issues, particularly immigration.
On Wednesday, Enten highlighted data showing that public sentiment on immigration has become more hawkish.
According to the latest polling, 56% of adults now support deporting all illegal immigrants, a sharp rise from 42% in 2015 and 36% in 2016.
“Feelings towards immigration in this country, feelings toward undocumented immigrants and deporting all of them have become considerably more hawkish,” Enten said.
“I think it gives Donald Trump much more leverage to go with the American people and sort of have these hawkish, some might say harsh, different rhetoric and issue-based [policies] of going after immigrants who are here illegally.”
The data suggests that Trump’s second-term policies are aligning more closely with public opinion than during his first term, providing him with a stronger foundation to implement his agenda.
As Enten noted, “The American public is very much more in line with him than they were at any point during his entire first term.”
Trump’s improved approval rating and growing public support for his policies on key issues like immigration signal a shift in how Americans perceive his leadership.
As his second term gets underway, the president appears to be capitalizing on this momentum to advance his priorities.
