President Donald Trump addressed reporters during a press availability on Capitol Hill Tuesday, weighing in on both the upcoming reconciliation bill and the recent federal indictment of Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democrat from New Jersey.
McIver is facing criminal charges after being recorded physically confronting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents outside a federal facility in Newark.
Video footage from the incident, which has circulated widely on social media, shows McIver shoving and swinging at ICE officers during an unauthorized attempt by her and other Democrats to gain access to the secure facility.

Following the release of the video, the Department of Justice moved forward with charges, leading to criticism from some media figures who accused the Trump administration of politically motivated prosecutions.
During Tuesday’s press gaggle, one reporter questioned whether the Department of Justice had been “weaponized” to arrest a sitting congresswoman.

President Trump responded firmly.
“Oh, give me a break! Did you see her? She was out of control. Those days are over. The days of woke…” Trump began.
When interrupted by a follow-up asking whether he had instructed the DOJ to target McIver, Trump replied, “No, I didn’t, the days of woke are over. That woman, I have no idea who she is, that woman was out of control. She was shoving federal agents. She was out of control. The days of that crap are over in this country. We’re going to have law and order.”

The exchange marks President Trump’s first public comment on the McIver indictment since the Department of Justice announced its intent to prosecute the congresswoman.
McIver, according to law enforcement officials, is being charged with assaulting federal officers and attempting to forcibly enter a restricted government facility.
The video, which clearly shows McIver in a red dress, depicts her breaching a perimeter barrier and making physical contact with uniformed ICE agents during what authorities described as a chaotic confrontation.

DOJ officials have emphasized that McIver is being offered the opportunity to voluntarily surrender to federal authorities rather than being arrested publicly.
Rep. McIver, a first-term Democrat representing a district in northern New Jersey, had previously claimed she was mistreated during the incident.

However, the footage appears to contradict her account, showing her initiating physical contact with agents.
Trump’s remarks on Tuesday underscore his administration’s broader messaging around restoring law and order and holding public officials to the same legal standards as ordinary citizens.
McIver’s indictment follows several months of heightened scrutiny over physical confrontations involving elected officials.
The Department of Justice, under the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi, has stated that enforcement of federal law will be consistent regardless of political affiliation.
