The Civil Rights movement proved a useful template for the left. Identity groups are now manufactured at industrial scale. The “trans” community. The “disabled Ugandan poets” community. The “people who don’t like tomatoes” community. Each beseeches the public for “basic human dignity” — which, more often than not, entails capitulating to a host of philosophically and morally repugnant priors.
The Democratic Party enthusiastically accepted those priors, hoping to supplement their traditional base of supporters with a jumble of assorted elements. The gamble failed to secure a win in the 2024 presidential election. One suspects that strategic blunder bears some responsibility for their plunging approval rates, as exposed by a new Wall Street Journal poll.
