The Dumbest Take on Iryna’s Murder

As liberals flail around to find a new excuse to ignore the horrific murder of Iryna Slutskaya in Charlotte, a new set of excuses has popped up: Republicans only care about her death because she is white, and if we really cared about Ukrainians, we would support Ukraine even harder in its war against Russia.

Republicans are using the murder of a Ukrainian refugee in the U.S. to further their agenda.

It’s a variation on “Republicans pounce,” but in some ways it is more revealing than the more direct version that POLITICO and other media outlets chose as the frame for the issue. 

It is true that race is a component in the outrage–after all, the killer muttered several times about how he got that white girl–so it is perfectly legitimate to point out that this was a hate crime, and there is zero doubt in anybody’s mind that it would be framed that way if the races of the perpetrator and victim were reversed. In fact, we all know that there would be constant media coverage and perhaps riots in the streets if Iryna were black.

Seriously, does anybody actually doubt that? 

The BLM movement has escalated its attacks on white people, and Jasmine Crockett just absurdly claimed that 80% of violent crime stems from white supremacists. Let’s just say that the statistics don’t bear that out.

The racial grievance culture is toxic. 

But this new variation on the “Republicans Pounce” is very revealing in another respect–a substantial number of liberals can’t wrap their minds around the fact that Americans naturally focus on what happens in our own country and prioritize events in other countries far differently.

Ukrainians don’t care about crime in Chicago or Charlotte, and I don’t blame them. Ukraine has enough problems on its own, and that is true of people around the world. We have a far greater moral responsibility to care for our neighbors than people half a world away. 

Even the thought that we care about Iryna as she rides a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, more than people in Kiev seems alien to them. But that is the most natural thing in the world. 

It is true that Iryna’s status as a Ukrainian refugee is part of the story, because it makes it more poignant, and because, ironically, she would be safer on a train in a war zone than on one in an American city is important, and points to the fact that America has problems here at home we need to focus on. 

To the extent that America should be concerned about the war in Ukraine, it is because it may impact our own security, at least as part of NATO. The International Committee of the Red Cross counts 120 armed conflicts in the world today, but Western liberals only care about two of them. Ironically, both involve white people, suggesting that race plays a role in THEIR calculations of importance. Conservatives focus quite a bit on the genocide in Nigeria, where Muslims are killing Christians, but liberals look away from that one and shrug because it is black people killing other black people. 

Trump is focused on eliminating crime in the United States–benefiting black people disproportionately. But he is doing so because he is an American, just as his war on the drug cartels is not motivated by saving Latin Americans. 

That is as it should be. Our political leaders are responsible for making America safe and prosperous. The globalist agenda, revealed by the claim that if we care about Iryna’s murder, then we are bound to care as much about Ukrainians in Europe, is bizarre. 

We care so much about the murder in Charlotte because it happened in our homeland. That is perfectly natural, and has little to do with her nationality. 

Home is where the heart is, and we can’t clean up the world while our home is in a shambles.
