Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who was defeated in his reelection bid on November 5, claimed during a CNN interview on Thursday that Republicans “rigged the system” to secure their victory.
Businessman Bernie Moreno won the Senate seat with 50.2% of the vote to Brown’s 46.6%, flipping the seat in a crucial Republican victory.
Brown criticized Republican campaign tactics, particularly their focus on cultural issues, including transgender policies.

He pointed to an ad featuring Kamala Harris, which highlighted her support for transgender prisoners receiving sex-change surgeries during her tenure as California’s attorney general.
“They lie about it, and they put — in this case, they — they spent $40 million on 8 different ads on that issue,” Brown said. He further accused Republicans of avoiding substantive discussions. “They weren’t talking about how to make Ohio a better state. They’re not doing their job on education. They’re not doing their job on health care. They’re not doing their job on creating jobs.”
When CNN reporter Manu Raju noted that the Republican campaign was ultimately successful, Brown doubled down, alleging election manipulation.
“Yeah, but they’re winning elections in part because they — they’ve rigged the system. They’ve made it harder to vote,” Brown claimed. “They’ve changed ballot language in a draconian, in a dramatic way with the last election. They did that with abortion rights. It didn’t work in that case.”
Raju pressed Brown further, asking if Democrats were out of touch with voters on cultural issues and whether the party had failed to push back effectively against Republican messaging.
“Yes, they spent all this money on you — against you — you guys. One, are you out of touch on those issues? Two, should you guys have done a better job in pushing back?” Raju asked.
Brown rejected the notion, saying, “I’m not out of touch on those issues. I go home, I hear people all the time. I know how they focus group and they lie. I mean, how do you call me out of touch when they lie about an issue?”

Brown’s defeat was part of a broader Republican wave in the 2024 elections. President-elect Donald Trump carried Ohio with 55.2% of the vote compared to 43.9% for Kamala Harris.
Republicans also flipped four Senate seats, including those of Democratic Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Independent Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
The Ohio race marked the end of Brown’s three-term tenure in the Senate, as Moreno capitalized on Republican momentum in the state.
His victory was attributed to a strong focus on economic issues and cultural concerns that resonated with Ohio voters, as well as robust turnout among Trump supporters.
With Republicans solidifying their hold on Ohio and making gains in other key states, the 2024 election underscores the shifting political landscape.
Brown’s claims of a “rigged system” and his frustration with Republican campaign strategies reflect broader tensions as Democrats reassess their approach to connect with voters in battleground states.
