There’s no good place to be chased by a knife-wielding maniac. But you especially don’t want to be chased by a knife-wielding maniac in Boston, where earlier this week, Mayor Michelle Wu offered her condolences to the family of said maniac:
“My condolences and all of our thoughts are with the family of the individual whose life has been lost.”
“The individual” refers to 32-year-old Lemark Jaramillo, who was fatally shot by an off-duty police officer after allegedly chasing two people into a Chick-fil-A in Boston’s Copley Square and threatening to stab them with a knife.
Wu, who earned two degrees from Harvard University, presumably has a firm enough grasp on the English language for one to assume intention in her deceptive phrasing. The attacker’s life “has been lost,” misplaced, as one might shed an eyelash or lose track of spare change. Wu continued, saying, “I’m also thinking of all the people who were impacted here today in one of the busier parts of the city…with this tragedy.” (RELATED: Boston Mayor Sends Police List Of Critics And Protesters | The Daily Caller)
When pressed on her initial statement, the mayor defended herself: “Every loss of life is a horrible tragedy.”
Missing from her quips is an active subject, such as, say, “insane and violent stab-happy criminal.” The tragedy which she refers to might as well be a hurricane or an earthquake. She continued to make opaque references to the event in question (which was, to clarify, a crazy guy chasing people through the streets with a knife):
“In this case we had an off-duty police officer who saw something happening.”
What exactly was that something, Mayor Wu? An ice-cream truck turning the corner?
Wu lambasted her critics, saying it is “unfortunate to politicize being at the scene of a tragic incident.” Wu is ignorant, or willingly neglectful, of the fact that her response itself was laden with political implications, emblematic of the deranged empathy which typifies Democrats. Leftists bill themselves as the arbiters of compassion, usually in an attempt to smear Republicans as heartless monsters.
But theirs is a disordered compassion. The Left’s sympathies are extended exclusively to politically convenient objects: illegal migrants, murderers, refugees from regions millions of miles away from their mid-century homes in the suburbs of Orange County. To qualify for a leftist’s empathy, you must be a member of the out group- the more distant, the better. Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks on “ordo amoris,” the Latin concept for rightly ordered love, come to mind:
Just google “ordo amoris.” Aside from that, the idea that there isn’t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense. Does Rory really think his moral duties to his own children are the same as his duties to a stranger who lives thousands of miles away? Does anyone? https://t.co/otvv5g1wFN

Wu’s instinct is to love the violent criminal before and above his victims. This, obviously, should be a disqualifying trait in any leader, much less an elected official. Recall when, in 2024, in Wu’s own Boston, authorities released a Haitian illegal migrant charged with the rape and indecent assault of a developmentally disabled person back onto the streets of the (Criminal) Sanctuary City.
The mayor will testify before Congress this week regarding immigration enforcement in Boston. One anticipates Border Czar, Tom Homan, who promised he would be “bringing hell” to the city, will be watching. Probably there are no legal grounds to deport Mayor Wu, who was born in Illinois. Still. Could it really hurt to try?
