Things Are Getting Out of Hand in Broadview, Illinois (Again)

For the past several weeks, protesters and Antifa groups have been gathering outside an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, which is a suburb located west of Chicago. Last Friday, the activists gathered for the usual chanting.

But a short time later things were getting out of control and activists scuffled with police.

DHS tweeted out this snarky post on X: “Get a job you imbecilic morons.”

A total of 21 arrests were made:

Twenty-one people — 12 men and nine women — were arrested outside the facility…

Moments before the clash, protesters were singing and chanting. However, around 10 a.m., a large group of about 50 people crossed the protest barrier and tried to walk up to the facility, knowing they would be arrested, according to the Cook County Sheriff.

In addition to the arrests, the scuffle also resulted in four officers being injured, including two Broadview police officers, one Illinois State Police officer and a Cook County sheriff’s deputy, according to Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson.

Today, Broadview’s Mayor declared an emergency so that a Board of Trustees meeting could be held remotely. A group of activists had threatened to shut down the meeting which was scheduled for tonight.

A village spokesperson said a death threat was made to Mayor Katrina Thompson on October 13. Village Hall received a bomb threat via phone call on September 4.

A press release revealed on Friday, November 14, a group of protesters tried to “storm Village Hall” and threatened to “shut down” a board meeting scheduled for Monday.

In response, Thompson says she issued a “Civil Emergency Order” and is holding the board meeting remotely. The FBI has also been notified of the threats.

On Monday night, the Village of Broadview said threats to village officials have grown over the weekend after a clash between protesters and law enforcement outside the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center led to 21 arrests.

The conflict with the protesters has been going on for months:

Village officials said a group allegedly tried to “storm Village Hall” on Saturday and threatened to “shut down” Monday’s meeting.

The last couple of meetings have gotten heated, and the one two weeks ago had to be cut short as the village has faced criticism for restricting protest hours around the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing center.

The plan is to keep the emergency declaration in place until the situation calms down. That may take a while.
