President Trump’s White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller spoke Thursday about the growing crisis of chronic illness among children, linking rising rates of pediatric diseases to environmental toxins, ultra-processed foods, and overmedication.
Miller’s remarks came during an event unveiling a government report spearheaded by Health and Human Services Secretary Bobby Kennedy, addressing the root causes of childhood chronic diseases.
Speaking from a personal perspective, Miller emphasized the emotional and practical impact of these issues on American families.

“I think about this first and foremost, through the prism of being a dad of three young children,” Miller said.
“And I’m married to a MAHA mom. My wife, Katie, is the one who deserves all the credit for educating me about this issue on the birth of our children.”
Miller praised Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, highlighting the significance of the report now carrying the federal government’s seal.
“Think about how extraordinary this moment is that Bobby [is] sitting there right now, not as a private citizen, not as the leader of a nonprofit… but as the Secretary of Health and Human Services right behind [a] government seal issuing this as a government report.”

He described his shock upon learning, with his wife’s help, just how saturated everyday environments are with harmful chemicals.
“Our whole world is filled with toxins, and [our children’s world] is bereft of all the natural things that humans have interacted with and encountered since the beginning of humanity,” Miller said.
The report, he noted, includes findings of toxic chemicals in everything from carpets and cleaning products to yard treatments and even breast milk.
“Even in a mother’s breast milk… we find traces of toxic chemicals because of what is in our environment,” he stated.
Miller also stressed the importance of a child’s exposure to nature and the development of a healthy microbiome, warning of the long-term consequences when children are deprived of this natural contact.
He emphasized that chronic illnesses such as immune disorders, skin conditions, and food allergies are becoming normalized despite being preventable.
“It is a crisis for that family as they search every single day to find that cream or that lotion or that medication that’s going to give that child some relief,” Miller said.
“It’s just fundamentally not normal for children to have any disease at all. Children are to be the healthiest among us.”
One of the most alarming trends Miller highlighted was pediatric cancer, describing it as “a disease of civilization.”
“There’s no other primate in the world where pediatric cancer is commonplace, only in humans. Why is that?” he asked.
“They have vastly lower rates of pediatric cancer in the developing world than the developed world… and when someone moves from the developing world to [the] developed world, within one generation… their children have the exact same cancer rates.”
Miller also criticized the long-standing practice of medicating children for typical childhood behavior.
“It was commonplace… for every young boy that I knew who was deemed to be too energetic, they were put on Ritalin,” he said.
“They had no behavioral issues… but if they were simply too energetic in class… the teacher would call the parent… and they would put that kid on drugs.”
He concluded by applauding the Trump administration’s effort to take on the chronic disease crisis rather than ignoring it.
“What Secretary Kennedy has done under the direction and leadership of President Trump is for the first time in American history, the full power and authority [of] the federal government is being used to identify and solve the chronic disease epidemic and not to cover it up,” Miller said
. “So thank you very much, and [it’s an] honor to serve with you.”
