Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed doubt Monday night over Democrats’ chances of retaking control of the U.S. Senate in 2026, saying he is “very pessimistic” about their prospects, as reported by Fox News.

Walz, a former Democratic vice-presidential candidate, made the comments during an interview at Harvard University’s Kennedy School Institute of Politics with ABC News reporter Brittany Shepherd.

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz speaks during his campaign stop in Bristol Township on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024.

“I think we will take back the House,” Walz said. “I am very pessimistic about the Senate, just to be honest with you.”

Walz cited the “very difficult” political environment as a key obstacle, noting that candidates in state-level races must overcome the national Democratic Party’s unpopularity.

“The thing was, is being associated with national parties and things on these state races, we’re going to have to figure that piece out of, how do we reimagine,” he said.

Despite his concerns over the Senate, Walz argued that President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office had provided momentum for Democrats.

“I think there’s a lot of wind at our back, but it’s been 100 days of destruction,” Walz claimed. “You think we can survive 550 more? That’s the real challenge. That’s how long it is ‘til the midterm.”

Walz’s remarks come as the Trump administration continues to highlight achievements from its first 100 days.

On Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Border Czar Tom Homan announced a 96% drop in illegal border crossings compared to the same period under former President Joe Biden.

During the announcement, the White House also displayed mug shots of illegal immigrants arrested for alleged violent crimes, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to its illegal immigration crackdown.

Leavitt is scheduled to appear again later Tuesday morning alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to outline the administration’s economic priorities for the remainder of the year.

The Trump administration’s efforts at the southern border and its early focus on national security and economic issues have drawn strong contrasts with the Biden administration’s policies.

Trump’s White House has framed the early months of his new term as the start of an “unprecedented era” of restored American strength at home and abroad.
