Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is calling for increased pressure on Senate Democrats to advance the Protect Women’s Sports Act, a bill aimed at restricting biological males from competing in women’s sports.

Speaking on The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM Monday, Tuberville emphasized that a majority of Americans support the legislation and urged Senate leadership to bring it to a vote.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act passed the House on January 14 with a 218-206 vote.

Two Texas Democrats, Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar, broke ranks with their party to support the bill. However, the legislation has yet to reach the Senate floor for a vote.

Host Megyn Kelly asked Tuberville why the bill has been stalled for months.

Tuberville noted that this was his third attempt to introduce the legislation and said that former President Donald Trump has also pushed for its passage.

“We’re going to get 60 votes, and we got a lot of work to do. We have 53 Republicans. We know we’ve got to get some Democrats. But it is a very, very touchy subject,” Tuberville said.

“It is a disgrace what’s going on. What’s going to happen is we are going to end up not having women’s sports because parents are not going to allow their kids to dress in dressing rooms, take showers with biological boys, or they don’t want them to compete against them because of [it] being a safety factor.”

Citing polling data, Tuberville stressed that public opinion is in favor of protecting women’s sports.

“[Exactly] 79% of the people in this country, Republican and Democrat, say it is wrong for men or boys to participate in women’s sports. We’ve got the majority on our side,” he said.

Tuberville also called on Senate leadership to take action.

“[Senate Majority Leader] John Thune told me he’s going to get it to the floor. He hadn’t done it. Now it’s time to put up or shut up. We’ve got to get it on the floor so people can see if it’s not going to pass. We’ll do it again,” he added.

During his campaign, Trump vowed to take action against gender ideology in government policies.

On his first day back in office, he signed an executive order declaring that the United States would recognize only two sexes—male and female.

“These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality,” the executive order states.

Trump also signed another executive order banning federal funding for K-12 schools that teach critical race theory (CRT) or radical gender ideology, as first reported by the Daily Caller.

Tuberville said he believes the vote has been delayed because Thune has been overwhelmed with other priorities but stressed that the issue could not wait.

“Now is the time to put pressure on the Democrats time and time again, four or five times. We have to, even before the next election, get them on the vote that they’re going to vote against girls and women having to participate in against men and boys,” he said.

“It’s devastating to the sports. It’s devastating to the lives of young people. There’s been rapes in dressing rooms and showers.”

He added that it was critical to keep attention on the issue.

“It is so important that we keep people’s mind on this and not let it go down and forget about it. This is so important to the people across the country.”

According to a New York Times/Ipsos survey, 79% of 2,128 respondents said that biological males identifying as women should not be allowed to participate in women’s sports.

Among the respondents, 1,025 identified as Democrats or leaned Democratic, with 67% agreeing that biological males should not be allowed to compete against women.

With public opinion strongly favoring protections for women’s sports, Tuberville and other Republicans are pushing for a vote before the next election to force lawmakers to take a public stance on the issue.
