President Donald Trump hosted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House on Thursday for a bilateral meeting and working lunch focused on strengthening ties between the United States and Italy, as well as reaffirming a shared commitment to revitalizing Western civilization.
During a joint press appearance in the Oval Office following their meeting, Meloni expressed a strong sense of partnership with President Trump, saying the two leaders share a vision for restoring the strength and influence of the West.
“I know that when I speak about [the] West mainly, I don’t speak about a geographical space. I speak about the civilization, and I want to make that civilization stronger,” Meloni said.

“So I think even if we have some problems, okay, between the two shores of the Atlantic, it is the time that we try to sit down and find solutions.”
Meloni extended an invitation to Trump for an official visit to Rome and suggested it could serve as an opportunity to engage with broader European leadership.
“Thank you for accepting an invitation for an official visit to Rome in the near future, and consider a possibility in that location to meet also with Europe,” she said.
“The goal for me is to make the West great again, and I think we can do it together,” Meloni added.

Meloni said the meeting covered a range of bilateral issues, including economic cooperation, defense partnerships, space exploration, and energy.
She noted that Italy will move forward with increasing its imports of liquefied natural gas, a point of alignment with Trump’s focus on energy independence and security.
Earlier in the day, Trump opened the press remarks with praise for Meloni, describing her as a strong leader who has gained respect across the European continent.
“I would say that she has taken Europe by storm and [is] highly respected,” Trump said.
“Everybody loves her and respects her, and I can’t say that about many people. And she’s become a friend, and we really have a great relationship between Italy and ourselves.”

The visit also comes at a time of ongoing trade discussions between the United States and the European Union.
Both sides recently agreed to pause newly announced tariffs for 90 days as negotiations continue, providing space to resolve disputes and potentially reach new trade agreements.
Meloni’s visit marks a continuation of strong U.S.-Italy relations, particularly under her leadership, which has focused on sovereignty, border security, and reinforcing shared Western values.
The meeting with Trump further underscored both leaders’ mutual emphasis on cultural and geopolitical cooperation across the Atlantic.
No official dates have yet been announced for Trump’s upcoming visit to Rome.
