As anti-ICE protests escalated into violent riots across Los Angeles and surrounding areas over the weekend, California Governor Gavin Newsom clashed with federal officials over the deployment of the National Guard.

President Donald Trump ordered 2,000 Guard members to the region following widespread reports of attacks on federal officers, vandalism, and unrest tied to recent immigration enforcement operations.

Newsom criticized the decision, accusing the White House of creating a “spectacle” and warning that the deployment could erode public trust.

The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle.

Don’t give them one.

Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.

The governor, who has supported sanctuary policies in California, also defended the rights of illegal immigrants targeted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a series of posts on Truth Social early Sunday morning, President Trump defended the deployment and emphasized the federal government’s intent to maintain law and order.

“These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED,” Trump wrote.

“Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!”

Reports from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that ICE operations would continue as planned, despite resistance from local activists and clashes at several detention facilities.

Protesters have been recorded damaging federal vehicles, blocking ICE agents, and in some cases, attacking law enforcement with improvised weapons.

Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino issued a statement on Sunday confirming that multiple arrests had already been made in both Los Angeles and New York.

He warned that federal prosecutions would move forward for those involved in violent acts.

“We are not stopping or slowing down. We are not intimidated or apprehensive. Illegal immigration operations will continue, and anyone using violence to obstruct or impede these operations will be investigated and prosecuted,” Bongino said in a post on X.

“Many of these subjects will face federal charges, along with local and state charges,” he added.

“It will not end well for you if you choose violence. Choose wisely.”

Tensions between federal and state officials continued to rise after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that Marines at Camp Pendleton could be mobilized if unrest persisted.

Newsom called the remark “deranged,” prompting a direct response from Hegseth.

“Deranged = allowing your city to burn and law enforcement to be attacked,” Hegseth posted.

“There is plenty of room for peaceful protest, but ZERO tolerance for attacking federal agents who are doing their job.”

Over the past week, Los Angeles has seen repeated demonstrations in response to ICE raids.

Federal authorities reported that the raids targeted individuals with final orders of removal or criminal histories.

Violent flare-ups during protests have resulted in injuries to law enforcement and property damage.

Tom Homan didn’t hold back when asked about what Gavin Newsom said about federal actions in Los Angeles.

“Gov. Newsom is an embarrassment to this state,” says Border Czar Tom Homan.

“If he cared about public safety in the state of California, he would not have a sanctuary for criminals — where criminals get released to the streets of this state every day because of his policies.” pic.twitter.com/KLTujmgmfN

Despite calls from state officials to de-escalate the situation, federal authorities reiterated that immigration enforcement operations will not be suspended and that prosecutions for criminal activity at protests will continue.

The National Guard remains in place in Los Angeles, with additional security preparations ongoing.
