Too Fun to Check: Kamala’s an ‘Exalted’ Frontrunner for 2028!

‘Exalted’? For what? Blowing through $1.5 billion and leaving the DNC in a debt crater while failing to win a single swing state from a former president who Kamala Harris insisted was “disqualified”?

Axios reports that certain demos might exalt Harris for this performance. And that might be enough to vault her into the 2028 presidential sweepstakes … at least in the beginning:

Many Democratic powerbrokers in D.C. are done with Kamala Harris. They see the former vice president as a politically toxic reminder of an unpopular president, Joe Biden.

• But among lots of Democratic voters — particularly Black voters crucial in a Democratic primary — Harris is an exalted, historic figure.

Driving the news: This past week put the party’s divide over Harris into focus:

• In a swing through the deep South, she was greeted like a rock star by enthusiastic crowds of mostly Black men and women, and white women. Many told Axios they want her to run again in 2028.
• Harris’ appearances — like early polling for the 2028 race — defied top Democrats’ belief that she isn’t popular with the party’s base, and that people blame her for Donald Trump’s 2024 victory.

Er … oooookay. How did that work out 14 months ago? Yes, Harris got 75 million votes, but most of those were from coastal states that would vote Democrat even if a corpse sat on top of the ticket. (And one nearly did, let us not forget.) In 2024, Harris got the nomination without any sort of competition at all, strictly on her “exalted” place as Joe Biden’s VP, arranged to appease these same groups when the Great Biden Cover-Up got exposed on national television. 

Was that enough to win an election? Not in 2024, when Democrats had as their opponent the most polarizing figure in the Republican Party. So much for an “exalted” status. Marshaling women and black voters isn’t a bad strategy, but Harris was and is too inept to take advantage of it, as she proved in the election despite being given a head start and $1.5 billion. 

Nevertheless, some Democrats see Harris drawing crowds on her book tour and want to translate that “energy” as populist support. Axios calls it a “campaign-in-waiting”:

• Traveling by bus, she drew thousands of people to packed auditoriums in New Orleans, Jackson, Miss., and Memphis as part of her recently expanded book tour.
• In New Orleans she got a standing ovation when she was introduced to swear in new Mayor Helena Moreno, a longtime friend and ally.

Er … oooooookaaaaaay. Axios realizes that Kamala had an actual campaign in 2024, right? She drew thousands to her events during those 107 days too. How did that “energy” work out? 

And for that matter, has Kamala and the DNC retired her debt from that campaign yet? Harris barely lifted a finger in dealing with that debt last year. Will Democrats really want to cosign on Kamala 2028, too?

This may be what Josh Shapiro is targeting with the upcoming release of his own book. The Pennsylvania governor made no secret of his discomfort with the Harris team during and after the election, but the publication of Harris’ memoir angered him, and he’s getting the last word on the radical and anti-Semitic nature of her campaign. Shapiro may want to position himself for a 2028 presidential primary run too, and it would make sense to set Harris up as a piñata for that purpose. 

The truth, however, is that Harris has been a piñata all along. She’s utterly inept on the campaign trail. She proved that in 2019, when the nomination was hers for the taking, and she word-saladed her way out of the race two full months before the Iowa caucuses. She got a head start and a massive fortune in 2024 without competing for the nomimation at all, and she lost to the Democrats’ bete noire while barely landing a punch on him. Trump became the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years against Harris. If she runs again, the momey will go elsewhere, and Harris likely will talk herself out of competition even before that. I’m not sure which sources are whispering into the ear of Axios, but they don’t come from Reality USA.
