In yet another example of leftist leadership prioritizing radical ideology over practical governance, Worcester, Massachusetts, has officially declared itself a “sanctuary” for “transgender and gender diverse” individuals.
The decision, which came after an unhinged, two-hour public comment session, resulted in a 9-2 vote by the Worcester City Council in favor of the measure, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
Predictably, the move has sparked controversy, with opponents raising concerns about potential consequences, including a loss of federal funding.
The resolution, which reads more like an activist manifesto than a city ordinance, claims Worcester is reaffirming its “commitment to transgender rights” and will serve as a “place of safety” for individuals identifying as transgender or “gender diverse.”
The document goes on to state that, in response to so-called “anti-transgender legislation” in other states, families and individuals are fleeing to Massachusetts in search of a more welcoming environment.
The Boston Globe detailed some of the specifics, reporting that Worcester will refuse to use municipal resources to detain anyone for “solely seeking or providing” gender-related medical procedures.

Additionally, the city will not cooperate with federal policies that activists deem harmful to transgender individuals, nor will it deny access to housing, education, healthcare, or employment based on gender identity.
In other words, the city has unilaterally decided to disregard federal policies that don’t align with the radical left’s agenda.
When questioned about potential financial repercussions—such as losing federal funding if the Trump administration returns to power—City Solicitor Alexandra Kalkounis admitted that it’s a distinct possibility.
However, Worcester’s Mayor Joseph Petty, a Democrat, shrugged off those concerns.
“We’re passing a resolution. It’s just saying, hey, we got your back.”
He doubled down, dismissing concerns about funding loss and broader policy implications.
“That’s all it’s saying. And that’s what people are looking for. So they can go home and sleep safe at night here in the city of Worcester.”
Meanwhile, the two council members who dared to vote against the measure—Morris A. Bergman and Donna M. Colorio—are now facing backlash from LGBTQ activists and leftist agitators.

Their opposition was based on a very real and valid concern: protecting Worcester from unnecessary financial and legal risks. But in today’s political climate, questioning radical policies makes you a target.
As Massachusetts continues down the path of progressive extremism, cities like Worcester are proving they are more interested in virtue signaling than responsible governance. Time will tell if Worcester taxpayers will be footing the bill for yet another left-wing social experiment.
