Minneapolis police say the mother of Robin Westman, the 23-year-old who opened fire at Annunciation Catholic School on Wednesday, has not cooperated with investigators and has hired a criminal defense attorney following the attack that left two children dead and 18 others injured.

BREAKING: The mother of Robin Westman has obtained a criminal defense attorney, according to Fox News.

Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed Thursday that investigators have been unable to speak with Westman’s mother, Mary Grace Westman, despite repeated efforts to reach her.

“We have not been successful in talking to the shooter’s mother,” O’Hara told reporters during a press conference.

He did not provide further details about the attempts to establish contact.

Authorities said four search warrants were executed Wednesday, resulting in the seizure of hundreds of pieces of evidence, including electronic devices.

Later that day, Fox News reported that Mary Grace Westman retained defense attorney Ryan Garry to represent her.

“She is completely distraught about the situation and has no culpability but is seeking an attorney to deal with calls like this,” Garry told the outlet.

Garry is a Minneapolis-based lawyer who has represented several high-profile clients.

According to legal records and public profiles, he worked with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick in a lawsuit involving George Floyd protesters, defended rapper Desiigner on an indecent exposure charge stemming from a 2023 airline incident, and successfully secured a not guilty verdict for a Minnesota state trooper accused of a sex crime.

Records show that in 2020, Mary Grace Westman signed documents supporting her child’s legal name change from Robert to Robin.

She had worked as a secretary at Annunciation Catholic School for five years before retiring in 2021.

Investigators are also reviewing a manifesto believed to have been recorded by Robin Westman and later posted to YouTube.

In the writings, Westman expressed regret over identifying as transgender and described ongoing struggles with gender identity.

“I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I’m tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself,” the document stated.

Another passage read: “I regret being trans. I wish I was a girl, I just know I cannot achieve that body with the technology we have today. I also can’t afford that.”

The manifesto also noted that Westman considered cutting his hair on the day of the attack, writing that the change “might be a concerning change of character that could get me reported.”

Robin Westman had previously attended Annunciation Catholic School, located less than a mile from the family home.

On Wednesday morning, Westman opened fire through stained-glass windows during a back-to-school Mass.

Two children, ages eight and ten, were killed instantly. Eighteen others were injured, including 15 students, several of whom remain hospitalized in critical condition.

The shooting has left the Annunciation community reeling.

Parish records confirm Mary Grace Westman’s long employment history with the school, and neighbors said the family’s Tudor-style home is located on a quiet residential street nearby.

Police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack, with special attention to the shooter’s writings and electronic records obtained in the searches.

Officials have not announced any additional arrests or charges connected to the case.
