Authorities in Minneapolis continue to investigate the background of 23-year-old Robin Westman, the gunman responsible for a mass shooting at a Catholic school and church that left two children dead and at least 18 others injured, as reported by The New York Post.

According to police records reviewed by Fox9, Westman had recently gone through a breakup with a romantic partner and was staying with a friend in the days leading up to the shooting.

Westman’s father told investigators about the relationship ending, saying the shooter had “broke up with a significant and/or romantic partner.”

Additional records show police responded to Westman’s family home in 2018 for a welfare check involving a juvenile, described in the report as a “medical mental health” call at his mother’s residence. Authorities confirmed that Westman was the juvenile involved at the time.

The shooting took place at a Catholic school and church in Minneapolis, where Westman opened fire, killing two children and injuring 18 other individuals before turning the gun on himself. Officials said Westman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the attack.

Investigators also noted that Westman identified as a transgender woman but reportedly told others that he had “brainwashed” himself into that identity. Law enforcement is reviewing digital and written materials found in connection with the case to determine possible motives.

Authorities have not released the names of the children who were killed as family notifications remain ongoing. Several of the injured remain hospitalized, though local hospitals said many are expected to recover.

Police and federal agents are working to track Westman’s movements in the days leading up to the shooting, including his time spent at a friend’s home following the breakup.

BREAKING: The Minneapolis shooting suspect has been identified as Robin Westman.

The alleged shooter released multiple videos on social media, which showed that he clearly hated Christians. They have since been taken down.

Investigators are also reviewing his online activity, previous interactions with law enforcement, and mental health history.

The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis released a statement expressing condolences for the victims and families while thanking first responders for their actions during the tragedy.

“We grieve with those who have lost loved ones and pray for healing for the injured,” the statement said.

The incident has sparked renewed discussion among state and local officials regarding security at schools and places of worship. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said state resources are being made available to assist local authorities in the investigation and recovery efforts.

Law enforcement has not indicated that any other suspects were involved, and authorities believe Westman acted alone. The investigation remains ongoing.
