As President Donald Trump’s administration attempts his agenda, federal courts assert themselves in equal measure. The Trump administration has largely assumed a defensive posture, battling lawsuits and injunctions, and hoping for favorable Supreme Court rulings. That strategy appears to be changing.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) levied allegations of misconduct against Judge James Boasberg, filing a complaint July 28. Boasberg is the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He’s also Trump’s chief judicial nuisance. Boasberg is best known for ruling illegal the deportation of alleged Tren de Aragua members, which the Trump administration had justified via the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Trump described Boasberg as a “Radical Left Lunatic of a Judge, a troublemaker and agitator.” But it’s Boasberg’s alleged criticism of the Trump administration which has provoked legal trouble.
