Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) has introduced a series of legislative proposals aimed at increasing penalties for child sexual predators, including measures that would allow for the death penalty or life imprisonment for individuals convicted of such crimes.
The Florida congresswoman unveiled the bills as part of her effort to enhance protections for children and address the long-term impacts of sexual abuse.
Luna’s legislative package includes three bills focused on punishing sexual crimes.

Two of the bills propose death sentences or mandatory life imprisonment for individuals convicted of sexual offenses against children.
The third bill would establish a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years to life in prison for those found guilty of raping adults.
“If you are raping someone, if you’re molesting someone, you are essentially murdering their soul,” Luna said.
She emphasized the devastating and lasting impact these crimes have on survivors. “Those people never actually fully recover. I’ve actually sat on a committee with a very prominent [female House Democrat] who actually talked about the fact that she was molested as a child. And so you can see that it impacts and really hurts people.”
Luna revealed that she discussed her proposals with President-elect Donald Trump during a meeting over the weekend at Mar-a-Lago.

The meeting included members of the House Freedom Caucus. According to Luna, Trump expressed enthusiasm for the bills and their potential impact.
“I got the impression that he absolutely is supportive of anything in this sector,” Luna said.
She added that they also discussed the possibility of Trump signing an executive order to impose the death penalty for pedophilia, though such action would first require Congressional approval.
“He would be willing to sign an [executive order]. But the fact is, is that it has to go through Congress first. So it would have to come to his desk that way,” she explained.

This is not the first time Luna has introduced similar legislation.
She initially presented the bills during the last Congress but acknowledged that they failed to gain traction, potentially due to the inclusion of the death penalty provision.
Despite this, she remains committed to advancing the proposals, arguing that the severity of the crimes warrants the strictest penalties.
“Pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated,” Luna stated. “If you are going to continue to push forward in a moral society, [then] you need to ensure that people like this, that are predators, are taken off the streets permanently.”
Luna acknowledged the challenges of securing bipartisan support, particularly given the controversial nature of the death penalty.
However, she expressed hope that the broader goal of protecting children could unite lawmakers across party lines.
The bills are expected to face significant debate in Congress, as the death penalty remains a contentious issue.
Nevertheless, Luna’s proposals have garnered attention for their focus on addressing crimes that deeply affect victims and communities.
As Congress reconvenes, Luna’s legislative package will likely serve as a focal point in discussions about criminal justice reform and the protection of vulnerable populations.
