President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk pushed back against accusations from Democratic leaders and media figures that their efforts to streamline the federal government amount to a constitutional crisis.

The pair dismissed the claims as political attacks, arguing that their critics are the ones violating constitutional principles.

Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump are pictured speaking at the ‘Make America Great Again Victory Rally’ at the Capital One Arena in Washington.

During their first joint interview on Hannity Tuesday night, Trump responded to the accusations, saying, “That’s always the first thing they do. ‘He’s in violation of the Constitution.’ They don’t even know what they’re talking [about].”

Trump continued, arguing that those making the claims “couldn’t care less about the Constitution.”

Musk also weighed in, calling the accusations “absurd.”

“When these attacks occur, the thing that they’re accusing the administration of is what they are guilty of,” Musk said.

“They’re saying that things that are being done are unconstitutional, but what they are doing is unconstitutional.”

The discussion covered a range of topics, including the role of DOGE, Trump’s first 100 days in office, and broader efforts to reform government agencies.

Trump officially appointed Musk to lead DOGE shortly after his 2024 election victory.

The initiative is focused on eliminating government bureaucracy, reducing excessive regulations, cutting wasteful expenditures, and restructuring federal agencies.

Since its launch, DOGE has targeted agencies including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Education.

The administration’s moves have drawn significant backlash from Democratic lawmakers and left-leaning media outlets.

Critics have accused Musk of overstepping presidential authority and have even mockingly referred to him as “President Elon Musk.”

Musk dismissed the criticism, telling Hannity, “We must be over the target or doing something right. They wouldn’t be complaining so much if we weren’t doing something useful.”

He went on to argue that DOGE is working to restore “the will of the people through the president” and that their efforts have been met with resistance from entrenched bureaucrats.

“What we’re finding is that there’s an unelected bureaucracy — speaking of unelected, there’s a vast federal bureaucracy that is implacably opposed to the president and the cabinet,” Musk said.

Musk described the opposition from the left as “the thrashing of the bureaucracy as we try to restore democracy and the will of the people.”

Trump and Musk also spoke about their unlikely political partnership, attributing it to a shared commitment to fixing government inefficiencies following Trump’s 2024 victory.

DOGE, they explained, is the primary tool for combating “waste, fraud, and abuse,” but they also emphasized the need for competence in governance.

“When you add more competence and caring, you get a better deal for the American people,” Musk said. “The American taxpayer has been getting a terrible deal, particularly in the previous Biden administration.”

Musk also recounted a personal experience with what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” saying he had not realized how extreme it was until attending a friend’s dinner party just before the 2024 election.

“I happened to mention the president’s name, and it was like they got shot with a dart in the jugular that contained like methamphetamine and rabies,” Musk said.

He imitated the reaction of guests at the party, questioning why they were unable to have a rational discussion.

“It’s like they’ve become completely irrational,” Musk said.

The two also discussed recent media efforts to create division between them.

“I see it all the time,” Trump said. “Actually, Elon called me — he said, you know, ‘They’re trying to drive us apart.’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’”

Musk agreed, calling the attempts “so obvious.”

Trump added, “I used to think they were good at it. They’re actually bad at it because if they were good at it, I’d never be president.”

The interview marked the first time Trump and Musk have appeared together since the start of the new administration, solidifying their collaboration on government reform efforts.
