President Donald Trump on Monday criticized Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, calling the New York City mayoral candidate “one of the best things to ever happen” to the Republican Party, as reported by The Western Journal.

The comments came in a series of posts on Truth Social, just hours after Mayor Eric Adams announced he was dropping out of the race.

New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani speaks in a Malikah’s Iftar Ramadan event at the Museum of the Moving Image on March 07, 2025 in the Queens Borough of New York City.

“Self-proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” Trump wrote.

“He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises.”

Trump added: “He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years. It will fail again, and that’s guaranteed! President DJT.”

The president’s remarks followed Adams’ surprise withdrawal from the race. Adams, who had been polling in fourth place, said his exit was meant to clear the way for stronger candidates.

“Major change is welcome and necessary, but beware of those who claim the answer to destroy the very system we built together over generations,” Adams said. “That is not change. That is chaos. I urge New Yorkers to choose leaders not by what they promised, but by what they have delivered.”

Adams’ decision could benefit former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, both of whom are still in the race. Analysts say his departure reshapes the Democratic primary field, potentially leaving Mamdani in a stronger position heading into November.

Trump has criticized Mamdani repeatedly since the Democratic socialist launched his mayoral campaign.

In July, the president said he was “not going to let this Communist Lunatic destroy New York” and warned that Mamdani’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement would be closely monitored.

President Donald Trump delivered a special commencement address to University of Alabama graduates on May 1, 2025.

“We don’t need a communist in this country,” Trump said at the time. “But if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”

Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens, has gained attention for far-left positions including defunding the police, banning guns, creating state-run grocery stores, shifting tax burdens to predominantly white neighborhoods, and expanding protections for illegal aliens.

Despite those positions, polls have shown him leading in the crowded Democratic field.

The mayoral election is scheduled for November 4. With Adams out of the race, national attention has intensified, and the White House is expected to closely monitor the contest as Republicans look to capitalize on Mamdani’s candidacy.
