President Donald Trump demanded an apology from Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde early Wednesday morning for delivering a “boring and uninspiring” sermon at Tuesday’s National Prayer Service.
Budde lectured the president and Vice President J.D. Vance, who were sitting in the first pew at the service in the Washington National Cathedral, and pleaded for the administration to “have mercy” on illegal immigrants and “gay, lesbian and transgender children … some who fear for their lives.” Her comments come a day after Trump signed an executive order declaring the federal government will recognize only two sexes. “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart … She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!” Trump posted to Truth Social.
Budde also insisted “the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals” during the sermon and called on Trump to consider “communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.”
“She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people,” the president continued. “Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one.”
The president also moved to end birthright citizenship for children who aren’t born to legal permanent residents in another executive order.
Budde previously criticized Trump after police used tear gas against rioters during 2020’s George Floyd protests, calling his approach “antithetical to the teachings of Jesus” on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Budde is Episcopalian.
The bishop’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
