A deadly highway crash in Florida has brought renewed scrutiny to federal immigration policies after it was revealed that the driver responsible, an illegal alien from India, had been granted a work permit under the Biden administration despite being previously denied under the Trump administration, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

On Tuesday of last week, Harjinder Singh, a truck driver originally from Punjab, India, made an illegal U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce.

The maneuver caused a collision with a minivan, leaving three people dead. Singh was later arrested in Stockton, California, on Saturday and charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed that Singh entered the United States illegally in 2018 by crossing the southern border with Mexico.

According to FHP, Singh later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, a sanctuary state.

Officials stated that the investigation was conducted with assistance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through the 287(g) program, which allows state troopers to coordinate directly with federal immigration authorities.

“State Troopers obtained a criminal arrest warrant for the driver, Harjinder Singh, for three (3) counts of vehicular homicide. During the course of this criminal investigation and with the assistance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), State Troopers determined that Harjinder Singh entered the United States illegally, having cross the Mexico border in 2018,” the agency said.

FHP added that an ICE detainer has been issued, ensuring that Singh will face deportation after his state charges are resolved.

The case has fueled controversy after officials confirmed on Monday that Singh had received work authorization from the Biden administration in June 2021.

Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin stated that Singh’s application for work authorization had previously been denied by the Trump administration on September 14, 2020.

The revelation followed comments from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who attempted to link Singh’s employment eligibility to the Trump administration.

In a post on X, Newsom’s press office wrote: “As usual, the Trump Administration is either lying or clueless,” suggesting federal approval had been granted before 2021.

McLaughlin pushed back against those claims, clarifying that Singh was denied under Trump and only approved under Biden. She added that commercial driver’s licenses are issued by individual states, not the federal government.

“False. Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020,” McLaughlin stated.

“It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021. The state of California issues Commercial Driver’s Licenses. There is no national CDL. Sincerely, Genius.”
