President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he is giving Senate Republicans the go-ahead to make changes to the sweeping budget reconciliation bill passed narrowly by the House last week, signaling that revisions—including some “fairly significant” ones—are expected before the legislation returns to the House for final approval.

Speaking to reporters Sunday evening, President Trump stated, “I want the Senate and the senators to make the changes they want. It will go back to the House and we’ll see if we can get them. In some cases, the changes may be something I’d agree with, to be honest.”

The bill, which passed the House on Thursday by a 215-214 vote with one member voting present, has been a key legislative priority for Trump.

The final vote came after intense negotiations with members of the Freedom Caucus and the SALT Caucus, with objections ranging from tax provisions to spending levels.

Trump emphasized that he remains optimistic about the bill’s future, noting support from GOP leadership in both chambers.

“We’ve had a very good response from the Senate and I don’t know how Democrats can’t vote for it,” the president said.

“I think they [Senate Republicans] are going to have changes. Some will be minor, some will be fairly significant.”

Senate Republicans have already begun signaling areas of concern they want to address before the bill is brought to the floor.

“There’s some changes that we want to make,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) told Axios in its “Hill Leaders” newsletter.

“But we don’t want to change it so much that it doesn’t look the same.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) told Politico that the legislation would “undoubtedly” undergo multiple revisions before any final Senate vote.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has been openly critical of the bill’s fiscal impact, warning during a Sunday appearance on Fox News that the proposal increases the national deficit.

“The math doesn’t work,” Paul said.

While Senate Republicans are preparing amendments, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has urged caution.

In an interview with Fox News’ Shannon Bream on Sunday, Johnson said, “I encourage them to modify the package that we’re sending over there as little as possible, because we have to maintain that balance, and it’s a very delicate thing.”

Despite Johnson’s concerns, Trump reaffirmed his confidence in the legislative process, expressing praise for both Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).

“They have done a fantastic job,” Trump said, adding that he still hopes the bill can be finalized by July 4.

The bill, often referred to by Trump as a “big, beautiful bill,” represents one of the administration’s most ambitious fiscal measures and is expected to address a wide range of issues, including tax policy, government spending priorities, and economic reform initiatives.

While specific language in the bill has not been publicly released in full, its path through the Senate will be closely watched in the coming weeks.

Whether Senate Republicans’ changes will be embraced by House conservatives remains to be seen, especially given the narrow margin in the initial vote.

The reconciliation process allows passage with a simple majority in the Senate, but maintaining unity across both chambers will be key as Republicans work to secure final approval.
