White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized Minnesota’s Democrat leadership over immigration enforcement, accusing state and local officials of defying federal law and contributing to deadly consequences.
Leavitt said sanctuary policies adopted by Minnesota leaders have undermined public safety and led to preventable tragedies.
“Democrat leaders in Minnesota, with sanctuary city policies, have actively defied federal immigration law and the will of the people, and as a result of that defiant defiance to Minnesotans have now tragically lost their lives on the streets of Tim Walz’s state,” Leavitt said.

She framed the issue as a direct challenge to federal authority and public safety, placing responsibility on state and local officials.
Leavitt said President Trump has made ending the current situation a priority and has directly engaged Minnesota’s leadership.
“It is President Trump’s hope and wish and demand for the resistance and chaos to end today,” she said.
“That’s why President Trump spoke with Governor Walz directly this morning, and he has outlined a clear and simple path to restoring law and order in Minnesota.”

According to Leavitt, the president laid out specific steps that Minnesota officials must take to comply with federal immigration law.
“Number one, Governor Walz, Mayor Frey, and all Democrat leaders should turn over all criminal illegal aliens currently incarcerated in their prisons and jails to federal authorities, along with any illegal aliens with active warrants or known criminal histories for immediate deportation,” she said.
Leavitt said the administration expects cooperation not only from corrections systems but also from local police departments.
“Number two, state and local law enforcement must agree to turn over all illegal aliens who are arrested by local police,” she said.
She added that local agencies should not obstruct federal efforts to enforce immigration law.
She also called for active assistance from local authorities in ongoing investigations and arrests.
“And then thirdly, local police must assist federal law enforcement in apprehending and detaining illegal aliens who are wanted for crimes, especially violent crimes,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt argued that the measures outlined by President Trump are neither extreme nor unprecedented, pointing out that similar cooperation already exists across much of the country.
“If Governor Walz and Mayor Frey implement these common sense cooperative measures that I will add have already been implemented in nearly every single other state across the country,” she said, federal resources could be used more efficiently.
She said compliance would reduce the need for additional federal involvement and restore normal coordination between agencies.
“Customs and Border Patrol will not be needed to support ICE on the ground,” Leavitt said.
“In Minnesota, ICE and local law enforcement can peacefully work together, as they are effectively doing in so many other states and jurisdictions.”
