President Donald Trump is set to travel to Kentucky on Wednesday as he steps directly into the congressional district of Rep. Thomas Massie, a seven-term Republican congressman who has repeatedly clashed with the White House, as reported by The New York Post.

The visit is expected to highlight Trump’s ongoing criticism of Massie while boosting the campaign of Ed Gallrein, the Republican primary challenger the president has endorsed in the race.

Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, is scheduled to attend the event in Hebron, Kentucky, according to his campaign. Trump will also make a stop in Ohio as part of the trip.

Washington, D.C., USA – May 30, 2025 – President Donald Trump leaves the White House for a trip to Pennsylvania on May 30, 2025.

Hebron is located in Boone County, Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati along the Ohio River.

The move marks a rare step by a sitting president to campaign against a member of his own party in the lawmaker’s home district.

The White House has openly criticized Massie in recent weeks, describing him as a frequent obstacle to the administration’s legislative and policy goals.

A senior administration official explained the White House’s frustration with the Kentucky congressman in comments provided to The New York Post.

“You can have differences, but you have to be constructive. He is not constructive. In fact, he’s the Democrats’ favorite member,” the official said.

Massie has drawn the administration’s criticism on multiple fronts. The congressman declined to support Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which the White House has described as the president’s signature domestic policy agenda.

Massie has also criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions, including the president’s military actions targeting drug-smuggling boats and operations connected to the conflict with Iran.

In addition, Massie pushed for the Justice Department to release all of its files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump has publicly criticized the Kentucky congressman in recent days.

During remarks to House Republicans at a party retreat at Trump Doral on Monday, the president referenced an unnamed lawmaker he suggested was difficult to bring into alignment with the rest of the conference.

“The Republican Party has fantastic spirit, the level I don’t think has been seen before,” Trump said.

“We have to get a couple of people on board, which at least one case, is virtually impossible. I wonder who that might be, sick person.”

Massie was not present in the audience during the remarks.

The president has previously described the Kentucky lawmaker as “the worst Republican,” reflecting the sharp divide between the two figures.

While Trump will appear in the district, Massie will not attend the event.

State of the Union Address

“Congressman Massie will not be attending as he has a previously scheduled official event,” Massie’s campaign told The New York Post.

Gallrein, Trump’s endorsed challenger, has taken a different approach toward the administration, praising Trump’s policies and backing the president’s leadership during the ongoing war with Iran.

The Republican primary election in Kentucky is scheduled for May 19, a little more than two months away. The contest is expected to test Trump’s influence among Republican voters in the state.

The race is also likely to reflect broader political debates within the Republican Party, including economic messaging and foreign policy.

The White House said Trump’s trip to Kentucky and Ohio will also focus on the administration’s economic policies.

White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the president will highlight what the administration describes as progress on lowering costs for American families.

“President Trump will visit the great states of Ohio and Kentucky on Wednesday to tout his economic victories and detail his administration’s aggressive, ongoing efforts to lower prices and make America more affordable,” Huston said.

The visit comes as economic issues continue to dominate political discussions. While the administration has argued that the overall cost of living has declined, recent increases in gasoline prices linked to the conflict with Iran have received significant attention.

Trump is expected to address those issues during his visit while continuing to campaign against Massie ahead of the May Republican primary.
