In a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, former President Donald Trump discussed the risks of political life, describing politics as a “very dangerous business.”

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD, USA- February 24, 2024: Donald Trump speaks at CPAC about his plan for defeating current President Joe Biden in November.

Speaking candidly with host Joe Rogan, Trump reflected on the dangers and unique challenges he’s encountered in his political career, including two recent assassination attempts.

During their conversation, Rogan praised Trump’s ability to engage large audiences with an unscripted, humorous style. “One of the beautiful things about you is that you freeball,” Rogan remarked. “You get out, and you do these huge events, and you’re just talking. We’ve highlighted you on the show many times — when you did those Biden impressions where he’s walking around and doesn’t know what he’s doing. It’s funny — it’s stand-up. It’s funny stuff.” Rogan highlighted Trump’s instinct for comedic timing, recalling moments when Trump’s humor resonated strongly with audiences, like the now-famous “you’d be in jail” line directed at Hillary Clinton.

Trump agreed, pointing out that a sense of humor is necessary to navigate the rough terrain of modern politics. “You know it’s funny, you need at least the attitude of a comedian when you’re doing this business,” Trump said. He underscored the risks involved, saying, “This is a very dangerous business. It’s a very tough business.”

Rogan shared Trump’s sentiment about the inherent dangers of politics, especially for high-profile figures. He described the profession as one of the riskiest, comparable to military service, firefighting, and law enforcement. “Other than going to war, and being a firefighter or being a cop, being in politics is the most dangerous business,” Rogan noted.

Trump agreed, adding, “Being president is the most dangerous.” Rogan took the opportunity to highlight the unique threats Trump has faced, referencing two recent attempts on the former president’s life.

The first attempt occurred on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, when Trump was speaking at a rally. According to reports, Thomas Matthew Crooks allegedly opened fire from a rooftop near the rally site. A bullet from Crooks’ firearm reportedly struck Trump, grazing the upper part of his right ear. The incident, though serious, received minimal media coverage.

The second assassination attempt took place on September 15 at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump was playing golf. Secret Service agents noticed the barrel of an AK-style rifle protruding from behind a fence near the course. The would-be assailant, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was apprehended before any harm could be done.

Reflecting on these incidents, Trump pointed out that coverage of the assassination attempts has been minimal. “Yeah, they’d rather not talk about them,” he noted.

Rogan further emphasized the potential disparity in media response if a similar threat had been directed at President Joe Biden. “Imagine if there was an assassination attempt on Biden,” he said. “How hard people would be attacking the right. They would be trying to get guns taken away from people, they would try to ramp up gun laws, they would try to figure out some way to blame you. If Biden got shot in the ear, we would’ve never heard the end of it.”

The conversation between Trump and Rogan sheds light on the unique challenges faced by political figures, especially in today’s divisive climate.
