President Donald Trump announced Friday via Truth Social that he would be signing a 75-day extension for TikTok, giving the app more time to find a buyer.

The Chinese-owned platform was approaching an April 5 deadline that would shutdown the app unless Beijing greenlights a sale to a U.S. buyer. Trump had previously hinted that he was interested in extending the time period and working out a potential tariff relief deal in exchange for China’s cooperation. “My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!).This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security! We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he continues.

Amazon recently put in a bid to acquire the app, according to The New York Times (NYT), but it did not appear the deal was being taken seriously. The outlet reported that Trump was planning to meet with White House officials Wednesday to discuss proposals that would help keep the app in the United States.

The NYT reported that there is a potential deal being outlined that would involve bringing in several new U.S. investors, including Oracle and Blackstone.

“Maybe I’ll give them a little reduction in tariffs, or something, to get it done,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “You know, because every point in tariff is worth more money than TikTok, if you think … In order to get China to do [it], maybe I’d give them a reduction in tariffs as an example. Sounds like something I would do,” Trump said in March.

Trump was open to the idea of Elon Musk buying TikTok, he told the Daily Caller in January. Days later, Musk said he was not interested in buying the app.

“And I’ve met with owners of TikTok, the big owners. It’s worthless if it doesn’t get a permit. It’s not like, oh, you can take the U.S. The whole thing is worthless,” Trump told the Caller.

“So what I’m thinking about saying to somebody is buy it and give half to the United States of America, half, and we will give you the permit. And they’ll have a great partner, the United States,” he added.
