President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order launching “Project Homecoming,” a federal initiative designed to encourage voluntary self-deportation among illegal migrants residing in the United States.
Under the program, federal agencies will coordinate government-funded flights for migrants who opt to leave the country.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will provide travel assistance for those lacking proper documentation, arrange air travel “at no cost to illegal aliens,” and offer a $1,000 “exit bonus” to each individual who voluntarily departs.

“We are making it as easy as possible for illegal aliens to leave America,” President Trump said in a video posted on X.
“Any illegal alien can simply show up at an airport and receive a free flight out of our country.”
According to the White House, illegal migrants can use the new “CBP Home” mobile application to book their departure flights. “As long as it’s not here, you can go anywhere you want,” the president stated.
President Trump emphasized the long-term financial savings the program is expected to generate.

“The exit bonus will save American taxpayers billions and billions of dollars,” he said.
“Eventually, when the illegals are gone, it will save us trillions of dollars.”
For migrants who decline to participate in the voluntary program, the administration warned of legal consequences, including fines, incarceration, and deportation carried out “in a place and manner solely of our discretion.”
The president added, “We want you out of America,” and remarked, “If you’re really good, we’re going to try and help you get back in.”

The order instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to initiate a national communications campaign to raise awareness of Project Homecoming.
The outreach effort will inform migrants of the program’s benefits and highlight the consequences of failing to self-deport.
Additionally, the executive order calls for the “deputizing” of personnel across various levels of government, including local and state law enforcement, former federal officers, and employees from other federal agencies.
This measure is intended to bolster the upcoming deportation phase for those who remain in the country unlawfully.
The administration characterized the enforcement phase as a “full-scale, aggressive deportation surge,” which is scheduled to begin within 60 days.
According to estimates cited by the White House, illegal migration cost U.S. taxpayers over $150 billion in 2023.
The administration believes that by incentivizing voluntary departure, the government can significantly reduce this fiscal burden and reallocate public resources.
“By incentivizing voluntary departure, Project Homecoming aims to reduce these costs and restore resources for American citizens,” the White House said in an official statement.
