President-elect Donald Trump turned his sharp wit northward, taking aim at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau while making an audacious pitch to Canadians: join the United States as the 51st state and enjoy lower taxes.

Adding a twist of conservative charm, Trump even suggested NHL icon Wayne Gretzky as the perfect candidate to lead the newly minted “state,” as reported by the New York Post.

On Wednesday, Trump took to Truth Social, recounting his conversation with Gretzky, affectionately known as “The Great One” in hockey circles.

“I just left Wayne Gretzky,” Trump shared. “I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada? You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’”

This is not the first time Trump has ribbed Trudeau, referring to him as the “Governor” of a potential U.S. state.

Trump has long criticized Canada for what he sees as unfair trade practices and high taxes, framing his latest quips as a bold solution for Canadian citizens frustrated with their Liberal leader.

While Trump acknowledged Gretzky has “no interest” in politics, he encouraged Canadians to rally around the hockey legend.

“He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement,” Trump declared. “It would be so much fun to watch!”

Trump’s pitch comes as Trudeau faces growing discontent in Canada. High taxes, skyrocketing housing costs, and economic woes have led even some Liberal Party members to call for his resignation.

With a federal election expected before October 2025, recent polls show Canada’s Conservative Party surging ahead, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with Trudeau’s leadership.

Trump didn’t stop at humor. He painted a vivid picture of prosperity if Canada joined the U.S., claiming taxes for Canadians would be slashed by over 60%, and businesses would “immediately double in size.”

On the geopolitical front, he promised unparalleled military protection for a unified North America.

“Merry Christmas, Governor,” Trump wrote in another post, doubling down on his playful dig at Trudeau while touting the benefits of U.S. statehood.

Adding to the drama, Trudeau recently visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago in a bid to defuse tensions over Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports.

According to reports, Trudeau warned the tariff would devastate Canada’s economy, prompting Trump to counter with his signature bravado: “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?”

Wayne Gretzky, though not interested in politics, has a history of supporting Conservative figures, including former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The four-time Stanley Cup winner, who holds 61 NHL records, remains a beloved figure in Canada—making Trump’s suggestion both humorous and oddly intriguing.

With Trudeau under fire and Canadians seeking change, Trump’s barbed humor and big ideas resonate with grassroots conservatives watching the drama unfold.
