President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Chris Wright, a prominent advocate for fracking and the CEO of Liberty Energy, will serve as Secretary of Energy in his administration.

Wright, known for his role in advancing the American Shale Revolution of the mid-2000s, has long been a key figure in the fossil fuel industry, emphasizing increased production of oil and natural gas.
“As Secretary of Energy, Chris will be a key leader, driving innovation, cutting red tape, and ushering in a new ‘Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace,’” Trump said in a statement.
Wright’s appointment underscores Trump’s commitment to bolstering fossil fuel production and scaling back regulations aimed at promoting green energy alternatives.
Trump’s energy strategy, encapsulated in the slogan “Drill, Baby, Drill,” reflects his administration’s focus on reversing climate policies established under the Biden-Harris administration and prioritizing energy independence through expanded domestic production.

Wright has been a vocal skeptic of mainstream climate science, sparking controversy last year when he dismissed the notion of a global climate emergency. “There is no climate crisis, and we are not in the midst of an energy transition either,” Wright stated in a LinkedIn video.
His stance aligns closely with Trump’s views on energy and climate policy.
Wright has also garnered attention for his dramatic demonstrations of fracking’s safety, including a 2019 incident in which he drank fracking fluid on camera to illustrate its purported lack of harm.
This appointment represents a stark departure from the approach of outgoing Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who during the Biden-Harris administration championed a transition to 100% renewable energy.

Wright’s leadership is expected to refocus the Department of Energy on fossil fuel innovation and deregulation.
In addition to his role as Secretary of Energy, Wright will join the newly established Council of National Energy, which Trump announced on Friday.
The council, designed to streamline the permitting and regulation of energy production, will encompass multiple federal agencies and departments involved in energy policy.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum was named as the leader of the council and has also been tapped to serve as Secretary of the Interior. Trump outlined the council’s objectives, stating, “The Council of National Energy will consist of all Departments and Agencies involved in the permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, transportation, of ALL forms of American Energy. This Council will oversee the path to U.S. ENERGY DOMINANCE by cutting red tape, enhancing private sector investments across all sectors of the Economy, and by focusing on INNOVATION over longstanding, but totally unnecessary, regulation.”
Trump emphasized that this energy strategy would have far-reaching implications, not only for the U.S. economy but also for global diplomacy and technological competition. “This team will drive U.S. Energy Dominance, which will drive down Inflation, win the A.I. arms race with China (and others), and expand American Diplomatic Power to end Wars all across the World,” he said.
Wright’s selection, along with the creation of the Council of National Energy, signals a significant shift in federal energy policy.
Trump’s administration is poised to focus heavily on deregulation and the promotion of domestic energy production, marking a new chapter in the U.S. approach to energy independence and economic strategy.
