President Donald Trump made headlines Thursday by announcing the withdrawal of “Eagle” Ed Martin’s nomination to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

The decision came just hours after the President had highlighted a newly signed trade agreement with the United Kingdom during a morning press conference in Washington.

Although Martin will no longer serve in the D.C. attorney role, he will remain a key figure in the Trump administration.

On Thursday evening, Trump announced that Martin has been appointed to three positions within the Department of Justice: Director of the Weaponization Working Group, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Pardon Attorney.

“Ed Martin has done an AMAZING job as interim U.S. Attorney,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.

“And will be moving to the Department of Justice as the new Director of the Weaponization Working Group, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Pardon Attorney. In these highly important roles, Ed will make sure we finally investigate the Weaponization of our Government under the Biden Regime, and provide much needed Justice for its victims. Congratulations Ed!”

Martin, who was named interim U.S. Attorney for D.C. on Trump’s first day in office, was officially nominated for the permanent position in mid-February.

However, his nomination faced a roadblock in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) had indicated he would not support Martin’s confirmation, effectively preventing the nomination from advancing to the Senate floor.

Shortly after Trump’s announcement on Thursday, Martin responded publicly with a message of support for the president’s decision and commitment to his new role.

With Martin’s nomination withdrawn, Trump announced a new appointment to the interim role.

Judge Jeanine Pirro, a longtime ally of the President and co-host of “The Five” on Fox News, has been named as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Pirro is expected to take over responsibilities immediately.

The reshuffling of personnel comes as the administration continues its efforts to restructure parts of the Justice Department, particularly those involved in oversight of federal enforcement activities.

The creation of the Weaponization Working Group is part of that broader effort to address what the administration says is longstanding misuse of government authority under the previous administration.

Harmeet Dhillon, the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, praised the move on social media Thursday night, writing in support of both Martin’s new role and Pirro’s appointment.

The DOJ’s Weaponization Working Group is expected to focus on investigating allegations of political targeting, civil liberties violations, and misuse of federal agencies.

As Pardon Attorney, Martin will also oversee all matters related to clemency and commutations under the Trump administration’s second term.

The transition at the U.S. Attorney’s office for D.C. and Martin’s new responsibilities mark a significant development in the administration’s approach to internal DOJ accountability. No Senate confirmation is required for Martin’s new positions.
