Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, known for her controversial prosecution of Donald Trump, has been dealt a major defeat in the courtroom.

On Tuesday, the high-profile YSL (Young Slime Life) gang trial, Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, concluded with the acquittals of the final two defendants, leaving critics questioning Willis’s judgment and strategy, as reported by The New York Post.

Rapper Deamonte Kendrick, better known as Yak Gotti, and Shannon Stillwell were acquitted of all charges by a Fulton County jury, except for a single firearm possession charge against Stillwell.

The two men were accused of being involved in the 2015 murder of Donovan Thomas Jr., aka “Big Nut,” a rival gang member, during a drive-by shooting.

The trial, initiated in 2022, originally targeted 28 members of the YSL gang—allegedly tied to the Bloods—and accused them of crimes ranging from murder and armed robbery to drug trafficking and carjacking.

Over time, many defendants accepted plea deals, including Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, who unexpectedly pleaded guilty to lesser charges in October.

The YSL trial stands as a blemish on Willis’s record. After a grueling 10-month jury selection process and over a year of testimony, the final verdicts mark a sharp blow to her reputation. The case, once touted as a crackdown on gang violence, has ended with minimal accountability for its defendants.

Adding to the scrutiny, Willis’s personal life has also raised eyebrows. She has faced criticism over an admitted affair with Nathan Wade, whom she controversially hired to lead the prosecution of Donald Trump. Such actions have cast doubts over her professionalism and priorities.

Meanwhile, Willis remains the lone prosecutor pursuing charges against Trump, as two federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith have been dropped, and the Manhattan hush money case has been indefinitely postponed.

Critics argue that her fixation on the former president has distracted her from other responsibilities, such as the botched YSL trial.
