President Donald Trump issued a warning on Sunday about the possible consequences if Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani becomes the next mayor of New York City.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo, Trump criticized Mamdani’s policies and political views, calling them extreme and warning that New York would face financial repercussions under his administration if Mamdani were to win.
Mamdani secured a lead in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, gaining national attention and raising concerns among some political analysts who say his win may push the Democratic Party further to the left in upcoming elections.

“He’s a communist. I think it’s very bad for New York. I don’t know that he’s going to get in… but he’s a communist and he’s a pure communist,” President Trump said.
“But let’s say this, if he does get in, I’m going to be president and he’s going to have to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do the right thing.”
Trump expressed disbelief over Mamdani’s rise in New York politics and said he once believed the country would never elect a socialist, let alone someone he identified as a communist.
“It’s shocking… I used to say we will never have a socialist in this country. No, but we’ll have a communist. I mean, he’s a communist and going to be mayor of New York. So I was very surprised… I never heard of him, I don’t know who he is,” Trump said.

During the interview, Bartiromo informed Trump that Mamdani had stated he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if Netanyahu were to visit New York.
“Oh, he’s a radical left lunatic,” Trump replied.
Mamdani previously stated that he would arrest Netanyahu if the Israeli prime minister traveled to New York City.
In a December 2024 interview with Mehdi Hasan, Mamdani claimed such a move would align with international law, even though the United States is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court.
In addition to his controversial remarks about Israel, Mamdani has openly criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Following the arrest of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander by ICE agents, Mamdani referred to ICE as a “rogue agency.”
“If this is what ICE is willing to do to a comptroller of the city of New York, imagine what they are willing to do to immigrants whose names you don’t even know,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani’s campaign has centered on a progressive platform that includes proposals such as taxpayer-funded childcare, free public bus service, and city-run grocery stores.
He has also advocated for limiting the presence of police officers in New York City.
His statements and proposals have drawn criticism from multiple groups across the political spectrum, with opponents citing concerns over public safety, immigration enforcement, and foreign policy alignment.

The outcome of New York’s general mayoral election will determine whether Mamdani’s proposals move forward.
In the meantime, President Trump made clear that his administration will monitor developments closely and respond accordingly.
“They’re not getting any money if they don’t do the right thing,” Trump reiterated.
