President Donald Trump on Friday announced the creation of the National Center for Warrior Independence, a new federal initiative based at the West Los Angeles VA Campus.

According to the White House, the project will repurpose federal funding previously allocated for services and housing for illegal immigrants.

Those funds will now be redirected to prioritize services for U.S. veterans, with a focus on restoring self-sufficiency and dignity for former service members facing homelessness.

“During my first term, I signed legislation to increase accountability and expand benefits and choices for veterans in accessing care, and my second term will build on those efforts,” President Trump said in a statement.

“The VA campus in West Los Angeles will become the National Center for Warrior Independence with facilities and resources to help our veterans earn back their self-sufficiency.”

The White House stated that the center will provide housing, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and employment support for veterans living at the facility.

It will also serve as a model for long-term reform in how the federal government addresses the needs of former service members experiencing homelessness.

The Los Angeles area is home to approximately 3,000 homeless veterans — the largest such population in any U.S. city and representing nearly 10 percent of all homeless veterans nationwide.

The West Los Angeles VA Campus, where the center will be located, has a history tied directly to the care of disabled veterans.

Originally donated for that purpose, the land once included facilities that served thousands.

However, according to the White House, decades of federal neglect and mismanagement allowed the property to fall into disrepair and drift away from its intended use.

The president’s executive order sharply criticized the failure of past administrations to prioritize veterans’ needs, highlighting specific concerns with policies enacted under the Biden-Harris administration.

The order calls for renewed accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs and a full review of decisions to rehire and compensate individuals previously removed for misconduct.

“The new National Center for Warrior Independence will help them and other veterans like them rebuild their lives,” the White House said in a statement.

“The Center will promote self-sufficiency through housing, substance abuse treatment, and support for productive work for the veterans housed there.”

As part of the initiative, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will be directed to deploy additional housing vouchers specifically for homeless veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will be tasked with restoring performance standards and improving access to care.

The White House said new measures will also include reduced wait times for VA medical appointments by expanding clinic hours, offering weekend services, and increasing virtual care options.

The National Center for Warrior Independence is set to become a flagship effort in President Trump’s second-term veterans policy agenda, aiming to deliver direct, long-term solutions to a population that has long been underserved.
