President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that his administration is focused on achieving a permanent peace agreement to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, not a temporary ceasefire.

The president’s remarks came after a series of high-level discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and ahead of planned talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump underscored his intent to seek a lasting resolution to the conflict.

“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere ceasefire agreement, which often times do not hold up,” Trump wrote on Saturday.

The comments followed a summit in Anchorage, Alaska, where Trump met with Putin to discuss the ongoing conflict.

According to the president, the discussions marked an important step toward creating conditions for a comprehensive peace deal.

Trump described the meeting as successful, saying that the talks yielded agreement among the parties that a full peace accord, rather than a short-term truce, is necessary to stop the fighting.

Trump also noted that his day of meetings included conversations with European leaders and outlined that all parties involved recognized the urgency of pursuing a permanent solution.

He emphasized that a negotiated peace would not only end hostilities but could save millions of lives.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to visit the White House on Monday.

The meeting will follow Trump’s recent discussions with Putin and is expected to focus on advancing negotiations toward a comprehensive settlement.

The president also indicated that there could be a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin in the near future if conditions allow.

The war between Russia and Ukraine began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and escalated significantly in February 2022 with Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukrainian territory.

The conflict has since resulted in widespread destruction, tens of thousands of deaths, and millions of displaced civilians.

International efforts at negotiating peace have repeatedly faltered, with prior ceasefire agreements breaking down amid renewed fighting.

Trump has consistently argued that his administration can deliver results through direct negotiation and by prioritizing a deal that all sides will uphold.

The president’s statement on Saturday reiterated his position that short-term ceasefires are often ineffective and fail to resolve the underlying issues fueling the war.

His message suggested that the U.S. will work toward a settlement that secures long-term stability in the region rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.

The upcoming meetings in Washington are expected to play a central role in the administration’s peace push.

Trump has framed the discussions with Zelensky as a crucial step in building consensus toward negotiations that would include both Kyiv and Moscow.

While details of a potential framework for peace have not been released, Trump made clear that the focus is on securing an agreement with enforceable terms to prevent further bloodshed.

As the administration continues its diplomatic outreach, the president’s announcement reflects a shift toward direct, results-oriented negotiations aimed at bringing the war to an end.

With Zelensky’s visit scheduled and further discussions with Putin anticipated, the White House is preparing for what could be the most significant phase of peace efforts since the conflict escalated.

The president’s message on Saturday made clear that under his leadership, the U.S. goal is not to manage the conflict indefinitely but to end it with a binding agreement that stops the fighting and restores stability.
