According to the announcement, South Korea will now face a 15% tariff on imported goods, instead of the previously planned 25% that was set to take effect on August 1. Trump confirmed that this reduced rate is part of the new trade framework.
In addition to the $350 billion investment, South Korea has agreed to purchase $100 billion in U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other energy products.
The President indicated that further investment commitments from South Korea will be disclosed during an upcoming visit from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
βAdditionally, South Korea will purchase $100 Billion Dollars of LNG, or other Energy products and, further, South Korea has agreed to invest a large sum of money for their Investment purposes,β Trump said.
βThis sum will be announced within the next two weeks when the President of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, comes to the White House for a Bilateral Meeting.β
Trump also extended his congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his recent election victory.
South Korean voters elected Lee in a snap presidential race last month. Lee, a member of the countryβs liberal bloc, defeated conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo, who conceded shortly after the results were confirmed.
βI would also like to congratulate the new President on his Electoral Success,β Trump wrote in his statement.
βIt is also agreed that South Korea will be completely OPEN TO TRADE with the United States, and that they will accept American product including Cars and Trucks, Agriculture, etc.β
The President also thanked the South Korean delegation for their role in advancing the agreement.
βI would like to thank the Trade Representatives who came forward today. It was an Honor to meet them, and talk about the Great Success of their Country!β he added.
This agreement follows an earlier announcement by the Trump administration regarding a separate trade deal with Pakistan.
Under that arrangement, the United States will partner with Pakistan to develop the countryβs oil reserves.

Earlier this month, President Trump had declared plans to implement 25% tariffs on imports from Japan and South Korea, scheduled to go into effect August 1.
With this new trade deal now in place, South Korea will instead be subject to a 15% tariff rate, reflecting a shift in U.S.-Korea economic relations and expanded cooperation between the two nations.
