Turner, 52, brings a unique blend of experience to the role.
A former professional football player, Turner spent nine seasons in the NFL, playing as a cornerback for the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos.
He was drafted in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL Draft and retired after the 2003-2004 season.
Following his NFL career, Turner transitioned into public service.
During Trump’s first term, he served as the inaugural Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC).
The council was tasked with leading initiatives to stimulate economic growth in some of the nation’s most distressed communities.
Trump praised Turner’s contributions during his time in the administration, stating that he “helped to lead an unprecedented effort that transformed our country’s most distressed communities.”
Turner, a native of Richardson, Texas, also served as a representative in the Texas House of Representatives for the 33rd District.
His legislative experience is expected to play a significant role in shaping HUD policies under the incoming administration.
Turner’s appointment marks him as the highest-ranking Black nominee in Trump’s incoming cabinet to date, reinforcing the president-elect’s stated commitment to ensuring economic and housing opportunities for all Americans.
