Trump Taps Jamieson Greer To Be His Trade Chief

0

President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he’s tapped Jamieson Greer to serve as United States Trade Representative (USTR).

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed his nomination of Greer, a prominent figure in Trump’s first administration who played a pivotal role in enforcing tariffs on China and other nations to address what Trump said was unfair trade practices. He also contributed to the replacement of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“Jamieson played a key role during my First Term in imposing Tariffs on China and others to combat unfair Trade practices, and replacing the failed NAFTA deal with USMCA, therefore making it much better for American Workers,” Trump wrote.

During his tenure under former USTR Bob Lighthizer, whom Trump described as a “spectacular leader and person,” Greer was said to be instrumental in boosting the American manufacturing sector and reversing long-standing adverse trade policies. His efforts are credited with helping to spur the return of manufacturing jobs to the United States. (RELATED: Companies Scramble To Respond To Trump’s ‘Beautiful’ Proposed Tariff Hikes)

In his upcoming role, Greer will focus on addressing the nation’s substantial trade deficit, defending American manufacturing, agriculture, and services, and striving to open export markets globally, the announcement said. He has a background as a partner at the law firm King & Spalding and also served as the USTR’s chief of staff.

Greer, a native of Paradise, Calif., also has a distinguished military background as a U.S. Air Force veteran, with service records in Iraq, Turkey, and various stateside locations. In addition to nominating Greer, Trump named several more appointments Tuesday night.

Trump nominated Dr. Kevin A. Hassett as director of the White House Economic Council, John Phelan as United States secretary of the Navy, Jay Bhattacharya to serve as director of the National Institutes of Health and Jim O’Neill as deputy secretary of Health and Human Services.
