Trump: Troller in Chief

It took me years–literally years–to figure out that Donald Trump was a comedian. 

I know that is pathetic, but you should forgive me. I was, after all, an academic, and remain to my everlasting shame something of a political policy geek. Trump is something else entirely, which is why absolutely nobody compares him to Pete Buttigieg. 

Well, that, and his obvious preference for blonde busty babes. 

As Democrats intone seriously about how Americans are going to suffer grievous harm from the Schumer Shutdown, Trump has taken a different approach to the public relations battle: he is trolling the Democrats in the funniest ways possible, and it is driving them absolutely crazy.

The underlying point, which Trump is driving home through the use of unforgettable humor, is that Democrats are shutting down the government for the sole reason that they want to provide free health care to illegal immigrants. If Trump were taking the fight to the Democrats on policy grounds, he would get bogged down in complicated policy discussions and the competing merits of a clean continuing resolution and the Democrats’ alternative, and the details are more complicated than the talking points on either side claim.

Instead of fighting on the Democrats’ turf, he is resorting to a particularly Trumpian tactic: ridicule. Ridicule is not “presidential,” but “presidential” rarely pierces the Pravda Media veil, which hides the Democrats’ agenda and the wall of accusations hurled at Republicans. By ridiculing Democrats in outrageous and hilarious trolls, Pravda cannot ignore its message, because they are compelled to express their outrage, and the Democrats get thrown off their message because they have to express their impotent outrage. 

They can never resist an opportunity to call the President racist.

I find the accusation that the Trump post was racist to be a bit weird, actually. There really ARE Mexican mariachi bands–I have endured many performances both in Mexico and at Mexican restaurants–so what is the exact criticism? Perhaps it is that Trump is making fun of Hakeem Jeffries, who is black? If so, that is weird, because Trump makes fun of everybody, and unless the contention is that black people have a special immunity to criticism because they have more melanin than others–a racist contention–that line of attack makes little sense. 

Democrats just can’t help themselves, and that works to Trump’s benefit. 

There is a reason we no longer have debates like the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which lasted approximately three hours each time, with each candidate speaking for thirty minutes, followed by a ninety-minute response and a final thirty-minute rejoinder by the first candidate. In an age of television and smartphones, our attention spans have declined to the length of a TikTok video, or at best a nightly melodrama, if a fascinating story is being told. 

Political debates are the opposite of fascinating. That is why we have soundbites. 

We can bemoan the devolution of our politics into something less serious, but there it is. Trump does it because it works. 

Clearly, what the Democrats are doing doesn’t.
