“Today, I say goodbye. Adios,” Romero declared, standing on the steps of the very building where she once wielded significant political influence as a top Democrat. “I’ve had enough. I am now another near lifelong Democrat who is joining the growing number of people, including key groups like Latinos, who are leaving the Democratic Party.”

Romero’s frustrations with the Democratic Party have clearly boiled over, though she refrained from laying out specific issues.

Still, her words echoed a broader sentiment of disillusionment. “This is not the Democratic Party that I once championed. I do not recognize it anymore and I cannot continue. I changed my voting registration today as the sun was rising to Republican, which has under Donald Trump become the champion of working people, the big tent. And indeed, I will vote for Donald Trump this fall.”

While she didn’t go into great detail about her reasons for the switch, Romero’s background offers some insight.

Known for her strong advocacy on education reform and criminal justice, she has long been a prominent voice within California’s Latino community. Her defection adds to the growing trend of Latinos aligning with the GOP, especially as the Republican Party seeks to broaden its reach among minorities and voters fed up with the progressive policies dominating states like California.

Romero’s political career is nothing short of impressive.

Elected to the California State Assembly in 1998, she moved on to the Senate in 2001, where she represented the 24th district, covering parts of East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.

In 2005, she became the first woman to hold the position of Senate Majority Leader, a role she held until 2008. Her legislative efforts notably included passing the groundbreaking “parent trigger” law, giving parents more say in restructuring failing schools.

After term limits ended her Senate career in 2010, Romero made an unsuccessful bid for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

She remained active in the education world, founding Scholarship Prep Charter School and leading Democrats for Education Reform in California. In a controversial move, she even endorsed Republican Larry Elder during the 2021 recall election against Governor Gavin Newsom.
