President Donald Trump’s approval rating on immigration has reached its highest level to date, according to CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten, who said Monday that public support for the president’s immigration policies has increased sharply compared to his first term.
Speaking on-air, Enten noted that Trump’s net approval rating on immigration is now at +1, a full 20-point gain since June 2017, when his numbers were underwater by -21.
“Compare now versus eight years ago during Trump’s first term,” Enten said.
“Look at this, in his first term, Trump was way, way, way underwater. But he’s up over 20 points now in the aggregate. Some other polls even have it a little higher than that.”

“There is no issue on which Trump is doing so much better than he was in his first term more than the issue of immigration,” Enten added.
The increase in approval comes amid ongoing unrest in Los Angeles, where riots erupted last Friday following Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations that resulted in the arrest of at least 44 illegal immigrants, all of whom, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), had been convicted of serious offenses including second-degree murder, grand theft, assault with intent to commit rape, and assault with a deadly weapon.
Following the arrests, rioters set vehicles on fire, launched fireworks and Molotov cocktails, and vandalized federal property.

Graffiti reading “KILL ICE” was found on buildings near where agents were operating.
In response to the escalating violence, President Trump authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles.
The decision drew criticism from California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who both objected to the federal intervention. Newsom, speaking at a press conference, called the deployment “illegal,” while Mayor Bass argued it would escalate tensions.
Enten said the American public’s response to the situation has favored the administration’s approach.
He cited a new CBS News poll released Monday showing that 54% of Americans support Trump’s mass deportation efforts and 51% support ICE agents actively locating illegal immigrants in their communities.
“When you dive in on the issues, Trump is above 50% and his actions are above 50%, at least when it comes to those most directly connected to what’s going on right now out in Los Angeles,” Enten said.
Enten added that multiple polling sources show voters consistently prefer Republicans over Democrats on immigration. An Ipsos poll gave Republicans a 19-point advantage on the issue, and both CNN and CBS surveys showed a 6-point lead.
“No matter what poll you look at, no matter which way you cut it, the American public is with the Republicans [and] the American public is with Donald Trump and to a much greater extent than they were in term number one,” Enten said.

Border Czar Tom Homan also confirmed on Monday that ICE operations would continue throughout Los Angeles.
Homan warned that any local or state official who attempts to obstruct federal immigration enforcement could face prosecution.
When asked by reporters about Governor Newsom’s opposition to the deployment, President Trump replied, “If I were Tom Homan, I would arrest him. He’s a nice guy but grossly incompetent.”

Immigration remains a top issue for voters in 2024. Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris in the presidential election, became the first Republican nominee in two decades to win the popular vote and the first to carry the Hispanic male vote.
