Political commentator Tucker Carlson has weighed in on the 2028 Republican presidential race, predicting that Vice President J.D. Vance will be the party’s nominee.
While President Donald Trump has remained neutral on his potential successor, Carlson made it clear where he stands.
During a February interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump was asked whether he would endorse his running mate for 2028.

Trump declined to make a commitment, saying only that there were “a lot of very capable people” in the Republican Party.
His response led to speculation about whether he was keeping his options open or avoiding an early endorsement.
Carlson, however, had no such hesitation.
“I think people want to leave a legacy, all of us, and great men especially do, and the only person in the entire Republican Party from my position who’s capable of carrying on the Trump legacy and expanding it, making it what it should fully be, is J.D. Vance,” Carlson stated.

Carlson praised Vance’s role in the administration, saying he has been a key ally of Trump.
“I think his loyalty is without question, and his service to Trump has been profound,” Carlson added.
He contrasted Vance with other potential 2028 contenders, particularly Nikki Haley, whom he criticized for prioritizing foreign interests over American concerns.
“Look, the real battle here is between the people who care about the country primarily and people like Nikki Haley who don’t care at all about the country. They really care about the fortunes of foreign countries, and that’s how they’re paid, so I get it.”
Carlson expressed confidence that the “pro-America” side of the Republican Party is winning, even as political battles continue.
“It’s a constant battle, it never ends. But I think they will prevail in the end because ultimately, a leader is responsible for his people, his nation, that’s how he’s judged.”
Carlson also drew comparisons between America’s leadership and foreign governments, arguing that strong nations prioritize their own interests first.
“We’ll return to equilibrium, like Chairman Xi, whatever you say about him, like he’s got China’s interests in mind. Vladimir Putin, totally obsessed with the fortunes of Russia,” Carlson said.
“You may disagree with what Putin does, you may not like Putin, whatever. He’s about what’s good for Russia. Our leaders have not been that way.”
Vance, a former venture capitalist and author of Hillbilly Elegy, has risen quickly in conservative politics and now serves as Trump’s vice president.
According to Carlson, Vance has already established himself as a major figure in the Republican Party.
“He’s the vice president, but he has been a powerful partner for Trump. I don’t see any other, at this point, as of today, any other conceivable option.”
Carlson concluded by doubling down on his prediction for 2028.
“I don’t see any other, at this point, as of today, any other conceivable option. I think J.D. Vance will be the nominee.”
While 2028 is still years away, Carlson’s remarks signal that speculation about Trump’s political heir is already taking shape.
Whether Trump himself will endorse Vance in the future remains an open question.
