Tulsi Gabbard raised serious concerns about U.S. national security during an exchange with Fox News host Brian Kilmeade, warning that tens of thousands of individuals who entered the country after Joe Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan were not properly vetted, including at least 2,000 with suspected terrorist ties.

Gabbard said the issue traces back to what she described as the Biden-Harris administration’s mishandling of the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.

“We are currently very, working very hard to make this happen. I don’t have the latest number exactly, but I can tell you that this needs to happen very, very quickly,” Gabbard said.

“Again, I want to point back to that summer and fall of 2021 after President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.”

According to Gabbard, the scale of the problem is significant. “You know, there were over 100,000 people who came into our country because of that disastrous withdrawal,” she said.

“I’ll tell you, the vast majority of them were not properly vetted. They certainly were not vetted at anywhere near the standard that we require under this administration of allowing people into our country.”

Gabbard added that national security officials are now dealing with individuals who pose a direct threat.

“And of that number, we know that there are at least 2000 who are here who have ties to or are known or suspected terrorists,” she said.

Kilmeade reacted with disbelief and pressed for clarity on how many evacuees could be considered trustworthy.

“Which is unbelievable,” Kilmeade said. “So you have 88,000 who came on the Afghan evacuation program, and you’re saying most have not been actually vetted.”

He acknowledged that some evacuees had fought alongside U.S. forces but emphasized the uncertainty surrounding others.

“Some have done already proven themselves in the battlefield with people that you know are friends, and you serve too, and you don’t want to leave them to die in Afghanistan,” Kilmeade said.

“What percentage can we vouch for and which percentage are totally unknown?”

Gabbard said the Biden-Harris administration’s approach left the government without clear answers.

“Because of the very irresponsible and dangerous approach that the Biden administration took. We don’t actually know the answer to that,” she said.

She explained that federal agencies are now attempting to address the situation retroactively.

“This is why, through our National Counterterrorism Center, we are going through and working with our partners in the FBI and Department of Homeland Security in going and actually re vetting every single one of these individuals,” Gabbard said.

Gabbard framed the issue as part of a broader and ongoing threat to the United States.

“We’ve got to realize of what’s happening here within the context of the greater threat that we face,” she said.

“We know that al Qaeda and ISIS continue to actively plot attacks against our homeland.”

She warned that extremist groups are actively seeking operatives inside the United States.

“And so when you look at the spread of the radical Islamist ideology and the propagation of it, you look at active plots, and they’re looking for people who can carry out those plots,” Gabbard said.

Gabbard concluded by stressing the stakes involved.

“This is why we are so intently focused on this threat that remains the greatest near and long term threat, not only to the safety and security of the American people, but to the foundational freedoms that exist within our Constitution and Western civilization.”
