Two El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies and a Pacific Gas and Electric Company worker were shot Thursday during a confrontation in the Northern California foothill town of Camino, authorities said, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred on Mountain View Drive in Camino, a community located about 50 miles outside Placerville, according to reports.

Deputies were dispatched to the area after a PG&E crewmember reported being shot at while working near a home, KCRA reported.

The utility crew had been sent to the location to replace a utility pole, according to PG&E.

After receiving the report of gunfire, deputies and SWAT personnel responded to the scene and attempted to make contact with a suspect who was inside a residence.

Sgt. Jesse Dacanay, a spokesperson for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, said law enforcement officers attempted to communicate with the suspect.

Deputies remained at the location for several hours while attempting to resolve the situation.

Authorities told KCRA that during the standoff, gunfire erupted and deputies were struck.

The suspect was also shot during the exchange of gunfire.

Emergency responders transported the two deputies, the PG&E worker and the suspected shooter to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officials said both deputies were listed in stable condition.

The condition of the suspected gunman was not immediately clear.

The PG&E crewmember was also recovering, according to the worker’s union.

Bob Dean, business manager for IBEW Local 1245, addressed the incident in a statement provided to KCRA.

“We’re incredibly relieved that our union brother and fellow crewmember is okay after what must have been a terrifying experience. Our thoughts are also with the two El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies who were injured while responding to the situation,” Dean said.

“These workers respond to outages and emergencies at a moment’s notice, often working in dangerous conditions around high voltage electricity, severe weather, and other hazards to keep our communities running. That work already comes with real risks.”

“They should never have to worry about violence from the very people they are there to help. Unfortunately, we are seeing incidents like this happen more often, and it’s unacceptable.”

PG&E confirmed that its crews had been dispatched to the location to perform work on a utility pole.

“We are aware of an incident in Camino this morning that left a PG&E contract coworker injured. We are grateful to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office for their swift response to this incident. Our contract crews were there to replace a pole,” the company said in a statement.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or provided further details about what may have led to the shooting.

Officials also have not said how many members of the PG&E crew were present at the scene when the incident occurred.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The New York Post reported it had reached out to the sheriff’s office for additional comment.
