Officials confirmed that “Both arrested suspects were discovered to be in the United States illegally.”

The suspects were taken into custody two days after the alleged attack. Authorities identified them as 20-year-old Jonathan David Garcia-Lario, described as a homeless man, and 21-year-old Zaid Mayen, a resident of Chapel Hill.

Investigators said evidence connected to the case was recovered at an apartment in Chapel Hill, located roughly two hours from the Greenville crime scene.

According to law enforcement, the two men are accused of committing multiple serious crimes, including rape or an equivalent forcible offense, kidnapping, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Each suspect is facing four felony charges: first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree forcible sex offense, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury.

Authorities have not released details regarding the nature or extent of the victim’s injuries. However, officials confirmed that the individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital following the attack.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said the Department of Homeland Security was notified of the arrests. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is expected to become involved in the case.

Authorities confirmed that an ICE detainer has been placed on each suspect, indicating that immigration agents may take custody of them at a later time.

The arrests were carried out with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, which assists in tracking and apprehending fugitives. The Chapel Hill Police Department also participated in the operation.

Officials said the severity of the alleged crimes prompted detectives from the Major Crimes and Forensic Services Units to respond to the scene and lead the investigation.

Garcia-Lario was initially booked into the Franklin County Detention Center, where he was held without bond. On Monday, he was transferred to the Pitt County Detention Center, where he remains in custody without bond.

Mayen was initially booked into the Orange County Detention Center and is being held without bond.
