Two U.S. service members died and a third was seriously injured in a vehicle crash near the southern border in New Mexico, according to a statement released Tuesday by U.S. Northern Command on behalf of Joint Task Force-Southern Border.

As reported by The Western Journal, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday near Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Emergency responders were called to the scene along New Mexico Highway 9, close to the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station, shortly before 10 a.m.

While the statement did not specify the service branch of the individuals involved, a report by The New York Times, citing an unnamed source, said the three service members were U.S. Marines.

The identities of the deceased and the injured service member have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The service member who survived the crash remains hospitalized in serious condition.

U.S. Northern Command did not release further details about the nature of the crash or the mission the service members were conducting at the time. The incident remains under investigation.

Approximately 9,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed at various locations along the southern border as part of broader federal efforts to reinforce border security.

These deployments include both active duty and National Guard personnel assisting with logistics, surveillance, and support for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In a statement issued to local media, Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico expressed condolences following the announcement of the fatalities.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two service members today near Santa Teresa,” Vasquez said. “My thoughts are with their families, loved ones, and fellow service members during this difficult time.”

“With the recent deployments to and the new mission at the Southern border, we must fully review the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Vasquez continued.

“We owe it to them—and all who serve—to ensure their safety is never compromised.”

Officials have not confirmed whether the crash was related to operational activities connected to border security.

The Department of Defense and Joint Task Force-Southern Border have not announced when more information will be released.
