Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, labeling it “inhuman.”

He stated, “Every massive Russian strike requires time for preparation. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a deliberate choice – not only of targets but also of timing and date. Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas for an attack. What could be more inhumane?”

The attack targeted multiple regions, leaving many in freezing temperatures without heat or power. Reports indicate that over 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and more than 100 drones were unleashed on Ukraine’s energy sector.

Ukrainian officials confirmed that more than 50 missiles were intercepted, but several managed to hit critical infrastructure.

The city of Kharkiv was among the hardest hit, with half a million residents left without heating. Kyiv, the capital, and other areas also experienced widespread blackouts.

German Galushchenko, Ukraine’s Energy Minister, noted on Facebook, “Russia was massively attacking the power sector, and restrictions on electricity supply were in place.”

Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, DTEK, reported severe damage to its generating facilities. This marked the 13th large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this year, exacerbating an already dire situation for civilians enduring a weaponized winter.

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, denounced the assault, stating, “Russia’s Christmas gift to Ukraine: more than 70 missiles and 100 drones, directed at Ukrainian families celebrating in their homes and the energy infrastructure that keeps them warm.
