Actor John Cusack drew criticism on Easter Sunday after posting a message on social media comparing those responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ to President Donald Trump and his political allies.
Taking to his account on X, Cusack wrote:
“Happy Easter – Christ was tortured and executed as a Political calculation by the Trumps of the Day… Happy Easter.”

The post quickly sparked reaction online due to its characterization of the crucifixion of Jesus as a purely political act, equating the Roman and Jewish authorities of the first century with current political figures, including Trump.
The statement is the latest in a series of controversial political posts from the actor, who has frequently used his social media platforms to criticize conservatives and political opponents.
Historians and theologians have long debated the events and motivations surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus.
According to the New Testament, Jewish religious leaders accused Jesus of blasphemy for declaring himself the Son of God.

Roman authorities, led by Pontius Pilate, ultimately sentenced him to death under the charge of claiming to be “King of the Jews,” a title interpreted as a challenge to Caesar’s rule.
The events that led to the crucifixion included both religious and political factors, making Cusack’s assertion of it being solely a “political calculation” a subject of contention among scholars and religious observers.
Cusack’s message was met with backlash from users across social media, including criticism from religious figures, conservative commentators, and others who accused him of using a sacred religious holiday to push a political narrative.
The Easter post is part of a larger pattern of political commentary from Cusack, who has long expressed hostility toward Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other public figures.
In March, Cusack accused Musk of being a “Nazi” and claimed he was “literally killing people” while working with what Cusack described as Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency—a reference to the cryptocurrency Dogecoin’s ticker symbol, “DOGE,” repurposed by Cusack to criticize Musk’s cost-cutting ideas related to government bureaucracy.

Cusack has also been outspoken in his views on foreign affairs.
In October 2024, he addressed protesters at a pro-Palestinian rally in Chicago, describing actions by Hamas as “self-defense,” a remark made shortly after the October 7 attacks on Israel that left hundreds dead and injured.
That comment generated strong reactions from both political sides, particularly in the wake of the violence.
In another post on X, Cusack criticized the United States itself, stating: “We aren’t great, we’re f**king awful.”

Cusack, best known for his roles in films such as Say Anything and High Fidelity, has in recent years become more well known for his political posts than his acting roles.
While he has not held public office or worked directly in government, he maintains a substantial following on social media and frequently engages with political activists and advocacy causes.
As of Monday morning, Cusack had not responded publicly to the backlash regarding his Easter post.
