The championship game, held in Prague, saw the U.S. secure the gold medal behind a dramatic game-winner from Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson.
Thompson scored the deciding goal two minutes into overtime, firing a shot past Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni’s blocker. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei assisted on the winning play.

Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman was a key factor in the shutout victory, stopping all 25 shots he faced.
“We did it, the wait is over,” Swayman said in a post shared by USA Hockey. “Thanks for sticking along with us. It’s going to be a great summer.”

The win marks a significant milestone for American hockey. It was the United States’ first appearance in the gold medal game since 1934. While the team has earned the bronze medal four times in the last 12 years, the top spot on the podium had remained elusive until now.
Following the win, Team USA took a moment to honor former teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who passed away last year in a bicycle accident that also claimed the life of his brother, Matthew Gaudreau.
After accepting the championship trophy, Clayton Keller, Zach Werenski, Conor Garland, Thompson, and Skjei carried a No. 13 Gaudreau jersey and placed it on the trophy during the team’s on-ice celebration.
The gesture was met with emotional support across the hockey community.

Gaudreau had been an important contributor to USA Hockey over the years, helping the U.S. win gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship and earning a bronze medal at a previous world championship.

The United States capped off the tournament with a dominant showing, and the final win solidified the team’s place in hockey history. The championship was not only a long-awaited milestone but also a tribute to a fallen teammate who left a lasting legacy in American hockey.
